Covering all the bases from a Dicey night in major league baseball ...
King defeats Monster Sea 3, Bos 0. In Daisuke's first start it was debatable whether he was the best pitcher on the field that day. Last night, it wasn't. Felix Hernandez, likely motivated by being the "other" pitcher, was filthy. Taking a no-hitter into the 8th is remarkable just on the face. Add to it the atmosphere at Fenway Park and the matchup against Dice-K and it's even more remarkable. Let's hope this allows us to talk a little more about some other pitchers in the AL. King Felix's now has 17 straight scoreless innings pitched to start the season. Wow. (Seattle Times)
Dice just O-K again Again, even in defeat, he's still very good. But I asked last week that simply wait until Matsuzaka faces a legit major league lineup. Last night he got one and allowed 8 hits and 3 earned runs. You do have to wonder whether all the hub-bub might have left him with a little less juice. At this rate Joe Saunders is due for a solid outing next Monday.
Apparently, the "gyroball" was present on that strikeout to Sexson. It's as advertised as unhittable. (Baseball Musings)
2 saves, 1 day Not your ordinary evening for Francisco Cordero. I don't suspect this has happened too often. I'm curious if a reliever has blown 2 saves in 1 day? Maybe something new for Brad Lidge to shoot for.
Hey, hey the Phillies won Phi 5, NYM 2. Credit Adam Eaton maintaining the early lead as a result of a wild Oliver Perez (7 BB). I'm still waiting for the Phillies offense to show up. They were essentially handed this game.
Jerry Narron now my favorite manager That's saying a lot considering he's the Reds. But he was the ant-Dusty Baker last night having none of Edwin Encarnacion's lackluster behavior. Narron yanked Encarnacion's in the 1st inning after failing to run out a routine infield pop fly. Outstanding.
If I missed anything important, or you'd like to add a few notes please do so in the comments. The Stud of the night is pretty easy today.
