Don Nelson 1, Dirk Nowitzki -20
I feel sacreligous utter these words, but the first two days of the NBA Playoffs were more entertaining than March Madness' offering. We want upsets, and we got a big one.

Warriors handed it to #1-seed-soon-to-be-champs Dallas Mavericks. Maybe Don Nelson truly owns his former team after all. Regular season games mean nothing, but last night exposed Nelson's genius.

One number surfacing this morning stands out among all others: -20. Check out this gameflow chart from PopcornMachine. Nowitzki's plus/minus a staggering -20. Introducing (as you may have heard at least 30 x during the telecast) the Nowitzki Rules from Daily Dime:
Dirk likes to take one dribble, go right or left and then spin back. If you watch, there's often a player running at him, trying to steal on the spin. There were a few fouls, but trying to disrupt Dirk like that shows how well Nellie knows these players.
Not all the blame should be put on Dirk. Even if he had a good games, chances are Baron Davis was going to one-up him anyway. As you can imagine Golden State of Mind is gushing:
Whoa. Boom Dizzle, B Diddy, MVP, whatever you want to call him, he came to play tonight. His 10 rebounds in the first half were big as he was one of the guys crashing the boards and securing possessions for the Warriors. Then his 19 points in the 3rd quarter really defined the game. He threw the team on his back and just took over. He posted up Devean George, drove the ball in the lane for layups, and knocked down BIG 3 pointers to put the Warriors up 6 after 3 quarters. If not for Baron that quarter, the Mavs might be celebrating a win, not the Warriors. His final line for the night, 33 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals. Ballin!
While winning game one bodes well for a potential major upset, Mavs Moneyball points out something to keep Warriors fans a little grounded today. " Dallas has now lost game one in five of their seven series under Avery Johnson."

I had the Mavericks winning in six. I'll still stick with that. Anyone else changing their minds? Can the Nowitzki Rules work for 4 games?

Time to await Cuban's complaints response ...

I hope this series goes seven.  Definitely the most exciting series to watch...

Could Cuban make any more of an ass out of himself than last night?  The officiating was non-factor in the game yet he is going crazy like his team got the screw job.  I was checking out Steve Nash's interview in the current Playboy where he has some interesting things to say about Cuban constantly screaming at the refs.

Of course they shouldn't scare you. You're not the one playing them. Leave it to the team to be scared/not scared.

I still believe that the Mavs will win the series. Hats off to the Warriors though. But here's the scary part. Avery Johnson has the same pissed off look and the Mav's had the same hanging their head's mentality as they did last year when the Heat went on to steal game 3 of the finals. You know what happened after that.

Please do. I'd like to see how entertaining this can get.

Here comes the Maverick pride.

We all enjoyed or hated last night, i am the same-- Spurs got game 1 jitters as did the Mavericks, so look forward to game 2 blowouts from both squads. Spurs by 27, Mavericks by 15. Thats my picks.

as seen by the 40 and 37 point wins? he he he! And with the new "recent" line-up, a win still was pulled out. If the Warriors missed the playoffs, you should've been pissed at San Antonio rather than that ref that called the 'T' on Nellie in the Wiz game.

"Just wait till the series shifts back here to Oakland, the games wont even be very close."

Have fun eating those words. Perhaps some mango salsa to go with your crow.

Listen, I'm hoping to Warriors win, but Golden State is not just going to walk away with this series. I know you're all excited, telling everyone I told you so's ... but I'd wait another game or two.

is that 1 loss from San Antonio?

Charles Barkley said it best.

1) O rly?

3) O rly? Terry, Dirk, Stackhouse, George, Dampier, Harris, I'll name everyone on the team like you did.

4) Who has more wins over the last 3 years?

5) not coincidence. luck.

6) O rly?

7) O rly?

8) Ok

Everyone loses a game every once-in-a-while. They are an ordinary 8th seed. They sucked during the regular season...so does every other 8th seed in history.

Oh, since I make a lot of picks. I see how that can lead someone to believe my picks are always wrong. Plus, I didn't make any picks on game 1 fyi. and if I did, please link it to me.

*note* I have not made any picks this year for the playoffs, other than who I thought would win the series'. And I don't plan on taking any polls either.

I didn't know I was analyzing this series. Thanks! I've never made one post that would lead anyone to believe I was analyzing a series. You must have selective reading abilities.

nice! You can't lose or win if you don't submit something right? I'll side on this input here. You can't have a wrong prediction if you don't have one. We'll see if it was the Game 1 jitters. I think it was. Spurs by 27. Mavs by 15. Game 2 should be easy W's.

I just don't take polls anymore because there are way too many. Kinda loses it for me. I may start taking the game polls again, don't know though. We'll see.

Whoa... Did you not read any of the other blogs? I have said a lot of things as to why I think the Warriors have what it takes to win, but they need to execute it perfectly. Otherwise, one small mistake, and the Mavs win.

4/23/07

The Mavs will still win in 6.  They're the better team.  Its that simple.  The GSW will give them a run in every game but ultimately the Mavs are just better.

Not a Mavs taker, so it doesn't apply to me. I hope GS does mop up Dallas. Although, i should worry about Denver too.

i have no need though, i'm on your side. I'd pick the Warriors over Dallas any time if it means helping the Spurs, and thats uhm... always? So go Warriors! A sweep would be a dream come true, HAHAHA! 67 wins... flirting with 70 wins, just to get knocked out first round. HAHAHA! Only ONE Texas team can win the title- thats San Antonio.

Honestly, I care more about FanIQ than I do about basketball. It makes no difference in my life who wins this series. I'm just hoping the ping pong balls fall our way and the Celtics can snag Oden or Durant(preferably Durant).

4/23/07

Speaking of sad. What happened to this thread? It's good to see we can have a mature discussion about a basketball game.

4/23/07

I hear what you're saying, but you're making quite a few assumptions. And it's often I find a thread where instead of debating the game ... you switch and make it personal. You're smarter than that, and I know you want more competition around here. I love disagreeing with people as much as the next person, but because you have difference views doesn't mean you have to throw out demeaning language, etc.

For the record, I'm still taking Mavs in 6. I'm excited they won Game 1, too, but the Mavs are flat out a better team. I would be shocked if the Warriors shooting percentage tops their performance last night. They were as hot as you can get.

Honestly, I would rather see you post as much as you want. Just tone it down from time to time, and try not to get outrageous and make things personal. When you speak(type) rationally, you have some of the better and most articulate opinions on the site, IMO. But then someone pushes your buttons (which isn't hard at all), and you become unglued, and the discussion becomes worthless.

For Matt Cain's sake, maybe you should not comment on baseball until he gets his no-hitter, since you love jinxing him. But overall, I would much rather see you change HOW you comment, instead of not commenting at all.

And I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that.

I'd prefer you stick around. Here's why 1) you always good for a conversation 2) you were just jumping on people for disappearing after the Warriors won game 1. So I'd hate for you to disappear after/if the Mavs won the series.

4/23/07

I got off work at 5, and just now got online. It's not that I don't have the balls. Sorry I can't be on here 24/7 like most. I'd make the bet with you, however, that's a little extreme. I've stated that I think the Mavs have a chance to lose, so I'm not going to risk losing posting time when I know there's a chance. If you want to do something different, Like make me use a GS Warriors picture for a whole year, or something to that affect. Shoot, I'll let you photoshop anything into it and you can email me the pic and I'll use it. Or if you want to tone down the length of time to say... 1 month posting no posting, I'll do it.

I can't take that... lol. I have too much trash talking/analyzing to do... lol. 1 month, I put a Warriors pic in my profile until the start of the next NBA season. And I can not say anything negative about the SF Giants or GS Warriors for 3 months. How about that?

And I like to talk a lot of trash about Bonds...lol

Come on...just take it. It's only message posting. You could still make and take polls. And you've disappeared for almost 2 months before anyway...it's not unprecedented.

Ok this post has been awesome to read, thanks for that! hilarious, keep up this trash.... I just wanted to add something to the reason why people shouldn't be surprised by this. Granted being a Warrior fan i was as shocked as anyone to learn they would actually make it in less than a week ago. But here it is: I haven't heard any commentator mention this or any post mention that this warrior team is not the same team they were when they started, they're not even the same team they were on Jan. 16 when the giant Ind. trade happened. This team is now healthy, and they're momentum was ridiculous. Basically what i want to get at is, IF the warriors were healthy all year and had the team they have now, and were playing the way they are now, they would've been one of the top seeds in the west, probably winning the region. So don't be surprise if they make quite a run these playoffs...

I'll throw this out there too... I will create a thread (if the mavs lose) stating how full of crap I was, and that I should have never assumed the Mavs would win. I will let everyone bash me (including you) and I will take it where it hurts.

Ok, from what I understand, this is the deal:

I lose
1 month no posting
Must use the profile pic of Beast's choice until Nov. 2007
Will post a thread for everyone to bash me and stating how wrong and stupid I was

Beast loses
3 months no posting

That's correct, correct?

I think Mavs are starting to figure out they arent meant to win in the playoffs. They waste all of their energy during the regular season. Not sure if others seen it but Mavs looked flat-footed compared to how they looked during the season yet again maybe i am just overexagerating because as we all know this is the 1st game of a seemingly LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG series.

Pat, read my comments on this thread, and compare, I only asked for him to treat the rest of the quer's with respect, he got torn apart on the thread because he started it, I represent the Warriors, but not embarrasement

Warriors worry me a little. What if they do make it to the conference finals... then Spurs or Suns may face them... (hopefully SA). I think though-- its more mental on Dallas than physical... although the match-ups are a problem between the two squads... i really think the Mavericks were just out of mind in the games in Oakland. They were very focussed in game 4. They were running the floor very well, unfortunately so was Golden State. Dallas needs to win game 5 (duh, right?)-- but pending on how they react to this situation, will affect how they will come out in the closing games of this series. Hard to call game 5, but mentally its all G.S.; and they will fight 150% the end the series now-- GS 112 DAL 110.
