I feel sacreligous utter these words, but the first two days of the NBA Playoffs were more entertaining than March Madness' offering. We want upsets, and we got a big one. Warriors handed it to #1-seed-soon-to-be-champs Dallas Mavericks. Maybe Don Nelson truly owns his former team after all. Regular season games mean nothing, but last night exposed Nelson's genius.
One number surfacing this morning stands out among all others: -20. Check out this gameflow chart from PopcornMachine. Nowitzki's plus/minus a staggering -20. Introducing (as you may have heard at least 30 x during the telecast) the Nowitzki Rules from Daily Dime:
Dirk likes to take one dribble, go right or left and then spin back. If you watch, there's often a player running at him, trying to steal on the spin. There were a few fouls, but trying to disrupt Dirk like that shows how well Nellie knows these players. Not all the blame should be put on Dirk. Even if he had a good games, chances are Baron Davis was going to one-up him anyway. As you can imagine Golden State of Mind is gushing:
Whoa. Boom Dizzle, B Diddy, MVP, whatever you want to call him, he came to play tonight. His 10 rebounds in the first half were big as he was one of the guys crashing the boards and securing possessions for the Warriors. Then his 19 points in the 3rd quarter really defined the game. He threw the team on his back and just took over. He posted up Devean George, drove the ball in the lane for layups, and knocked down BIG 3 pointers to put the Warriors up 6 after 3 quarters. If not for Baron that quarter, the Mavs might be celebrating a win, not the Warriors. His final line for the night, 33 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals. Ballin! While winning game one bodes well for a potential major upset, Mavs Moneyball points out something to keep Warriors fans a little grounded today. " Dallas has now lost game one in five of their seven series under Avery Johnson."
I had the Mavericks winning in six. I'll still stick with that. Anyone else changing their minds? Can the Nowitzki Rules work for 4 games?
Time to await Cuban's
