I know there's the saying, if you don't learn from history ... you're doomed to repeat it. History has shown the Lions have failed on 2 of 3 WR selections, but history hasn't included a Calvin Johnson.
The media and fans with laugh. How could Matt Millen draft yet another wide receiver. Jokes will follow. Truth is, the only thing that would be a joke is Matt Millen passing on the most talented player in the draft.
It doesn't matter that they have Roy Williams. The Lions have all kinds of needs, and maybe wide receiver isn't in the top 3. That's still not a good enough reason to pass on a consistent all-pro. How many times have we seen a team pass on a guy because it wasn't a "big need," only for that need to surface in the next year. You always draft the best available assuming he fits your system. Give Martz a weapon like Calvin and for the first time since Barry Sanders, Detroit is a threat to score on every play.
Drafting Joe Thomas would certainly be a major help, but the Lions can fill up on offensive lineman in other ways. Thomas will also be a fine player. The Lions have drafted a lot of 'fine' players. If Calvin were to go 1st, he'd be perfect choice. I buy the theory you should build from the line up, but there should be an exception called the Calvin Johnson rule. The most talented offensive player to come out of the college in 5 years rule.
He's everything the Lions haven't drafted. Matt Millen should learn from history and still draft another wide receiver, because he's not another wide receiver. (AP Photo/John Bazemore)
