Clint Bowyer won the race and no one was particularly surprised. He was, after all, one of he favorites to win. The early part of the race was all about Kyle Busch, but he was hampered early on by a lack of communication with his crew. Although he could hear them, they could not hear him, making it almost impossible for him to let them know what kind of adjustments he needed on the car. NASCAR had said they would not mess around with the expected rain showers and the race would be called and considered a race once the halfway point was reached, should the rain come out. That resulted in the drivers racing the concrete mile just a little harder than they might have, if the race was expected to go all the way, which it eventually did.
Brad Keselowski had difficulties early on, entirely his own fault, and got a lap down. However, pit strategy enabled him to get back on the lead lap when two quick cautions followed one after the other. He continued moving forward quickly and with only a handful of laps to go he was moving forward quickly. Clint was leading the race, and Kyle Busch was running in 3rd, with Denny Hamlin right behind him, and Brad behind them, when this happened.
First glance one might think Brad "took out" Denny. Second glance, one might think Hamlin came down the track into Keselowski's lane, but an avid racing fan would be more likely to say, unfortunately, as Rusty Wallce said and I hate that, that it was a combination of the two. The race was winding down and Brad was in get up and go mode. In any case, the two got together, and Denny pulled his car behind the wall. Brad went on to a third place finish.
Denny Hamlin went on to a pit road shove. In post race interviews, Brad maintained his cool and indicated it wasn't intentional, but that he wasn't going to be pushed around. He said he was holding his line, the inside lane, and that Denny's spotter had told Denny he was there. When the TV crew spoke to Denny, who came willingly out of his motorhome to give his side of the story, the story was just a little different. Denny claimed that Brad had only just caught up to him and acknowledged that his spotter had told him Brad was looking to the inside, but he claimed Brad got into him. He also stated about the pit road incident
"I wanted to talk to him. He obviously needs some sort of guidance on what he needs to do to make it."
Denny was waiting for Brad when he exited his car, and after "speaking" with him, shoved Keseloowski. Keseleowski's rep in turn shoved Denny. Ever the mediator, "Pops" Eury stepped in and spoke to Denny, after which Hamlin left the area.
It seems Keselowski is ruffling a few feathers and hurting a few egos. Isn't that just too bad. Looks like Kyle might have some competition as the "bad boy" of NASCAR.
