Do you really know how much your football coach earns? Is he worth that much?USA Today came out with a report his morning detailing that compensation of nearly ever DI head football coach. (Charlie Weis who is believed to have the highest, was left off as ND is private)
So I thought I'd point out some guys I believe are over-compensated and under-compensated. I'm not only taking into account W and L, but the overall complexity of the job.
Overpaid (coaches among the top tier $$$)
- Dennis Franchione, Texas A&M - $2,012,200 When has he won a big game?
- Al Groh, Virginia - $1,785,000 - Remember those big recruiting classes he supposedly had? Of course, admissions is an obstacle.
- John L Smith, Michigan State - $1,545,000 - Laughing all the way to the bank.
- Mark Mangini, Kansas - $1,501,000 - This is borderline, but for being one of the top 20 coaches you'd expect maybe just a little more
- Tommy West, Memphis - $925,000 - Friends with the boosters? How is Memphis shelling out more cash than BC?
- Greg Schiano, Rutgers - $911,000 - Obviously, this will be rectified shortly.
- Tom O'Brien, Boston College - $733,000 - This stunned me. I'm skeptical it's even accurate. Bowl game every-single-year.
- Bill Cubit, Western Michigan - $188,000 - If he stays at Western, they become a MAC Power. But I have a suspicion Bill will be tripling his salary in a year or two.
