It's inevitable, every year the 17th hole at Sawgrass leaves it mark on the Players Championship. This year's victim: Sean O'Hair
Surely by now you've seen the footage of O'Hair's double splash on 17. He went at the tough place pin placement aggressively and lost. Twice. He responded by saying he was going for the win because you "either win or you don't."
In theory that's right, but it's more appropriate to just about all other sports. L's all look the same in baseball, football, etc. In golf L's have different looks:
2nd place: $972,000
11th place: $225,000
I think you can do the math. That's two very different ways to lose. You can't knock a guy for going to the win, but you can if it's not all that smart.
This begs the question -- what would you have done in Sean O'Hair's shoes? If I'm Phil and have millions and millions in the bank I go for the pin. If I'm Sean I just hit the green and take home my 900 G.
