#19 Vanderbilt Beats #13 Auburn 14-13, Shakes Up The Top 25 And The SEC Once Again [NCAA Football]
How Much Longer Can Vanderbilt's Wins Be Considered An Upset?

As you can see in the above video, Vanderbilt finished strong against Auburn, to beat the Tigers 14-13 in another SEC thriller. Auburn jumped out to an early 13-0 lead with 2 TD's in the first quarter. They missed one of the extra points, and that proved to be very costly in the end.

Vanderbilt chipped away at the lead, with a TD in each of the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Vanderbilt QB Mackenzi Adams took over for starter Chris Nickson, and had the 2 key TD's for the Commodores.

Auburn's defense was known as one of the best in the country, but Vandy matched their efforts, especially late in the game. After allowing the 2 early scores, the Vanderbilt defense shut down Auburn, keeping them scoreless until the end.

As shown in the video, Brett Upson's punt late in the game was huge, pinning Auburn back inside the 3 yard line with about 2 minutes remaining. On the next play, Myron Lewis intercepted Chris Todd's pass, allowing the Commodores to kneel the ball and allow the clock to run down to zero and preserve the win.

Now that they've passed their first big test, it's not even close to over for Vanderbilt. They will move up the rankings this week, probably to the #11-15 range. They will certainly pass Wisconsin, Auburn and South Florida, at the very least. I also believe they should pass Kansas, who barely squeaked by a mediocre Iowa State team. Utah's close call against Oregon State might cost them a spot as well.

The next month on Vandy's schedule will not be easy. They play at Mississippi State next week. Although they are only 1-4 right now, the Bulldogs gave Auburn fits, allowing only 3 points and losing 3-2. Their defense is pretty solid. After that, the Commodores face the other Bulldogs. Preseason #1 Georgia hosts Vanderbilt on October 18, in what might be the toughest game of their season. A win over Georgia would be huge for this program, and would immediately propel them into the top 10, and into the National Championship discussion. Two weeks later, they host Florida, and last year's Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow will look to run all over them.

I think that Cinderella's slipper will eventually fall off, and Vanderbilt will lose to either Georgia, Florida, or both. No matter what, this season will be considered a success, and they will build on it for the future. This is a very good team, and that won't change even if they lose a couple games to good teams like Georgia and Florida. Look for them to finish the season in the top 15-20, and get invited to a quality bowl game. The former doormats of the SEC are moving up in the world.

Vandy is a surprise in the very traditional SEC, you would think that Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia would be leading the conference, but no...it's Vandy. They should be taken seriously.

It still amazes me how excited you SEC fans get about winning a game against a average, @ best football team. Maybee it's because Vanderbilt has been a poor, pathetic program for, well, forever. Auburn? They scored, as you said, 3 measly points against another pathetic team, Mississippi St. Keep those weekly , BORING, NO-ONE CARES SEC scores coming, everyone needs a good dose of humor every day, wait, how about the 13 points Tennessee ran up against Northern Illinois? Guess coach Fullmer called off the SEC DOGS, EH??

Who SEC fans? I'm a Boston College (ACC) fan, and the person who commented above you is a Stanford (Pac-10) fan. Who are you talking to?

By the way... I don't know if you saw the Auburn-LSU game, but Auburn actually is a pretty good football team. Not the greatest offense in the world, but they're still pretty solid.

Then again, you're a Michigan fan, so you wouldn't know a good football team if one slapped you in the face... or beat you by 2 TD's in the Rose Bowl.

OK, i thought this was from an SEC guy, my mistake. The point is, i will never understand this absurd love fest with average teams being elevated in the rankings because they have to play against each other in the SEC. I very well understand how good 11-0, 10-1 teams are, but the teams that go 9-3, or 8-4 playing in the SEC don't deserve high rankings than other teams around the country who have the same, or better records playing in the PAC-10, BIG 12, ACC, BIG TEN, etc. Also, alowing a 2 loss team like LSU to play for the national title, because they lost those two games to conference teams, is absurd, and ignorant. As far as being a Michigan fan, be asured, that i know how good, or poor my team plays EVERY single week, and Michigan players will not be seen crying on t.v. after losing a game at home, like Tim Tebow did after the Gators LOST @ home, to a team that had previously LOST 14 straight conference games. i have been watching college football games for 33 years, and have watched games played by teams in every conference. No league, until the SEC and this silly BCS mess, has ever been given an advantage by the media until now. Maybe we should just have two college divisions, the 12 SEC schools, and then they can play their conference schedule, name themselves national champions, and the rest of the teams can continue as is, playing each other, then crown the TRUE champion. By the way, i have always liked Boston College, and root for them every time they play Notre Dame! Thanks again for correcting me on my mis-information, and see ya next time!
