I think everyone knows the tradition of the '72 Dolphins. Every NFL season, after the last undefeated NFL team loses, they pop open a bottle of champagne to celebrate the fact that they're still the only undefeated team in NFL history. Unfortunately, the popped cork has yet to brutally wound any of the old players yet. And while the Dolphins had to seriously sweat last year - I'll be honest, I almost wanted the Patriots to win the Super Bowl just to shut these idiots up - they're not too concerned about the Titans this year.
"I don't think they're that good," former Dolphins running back Jim Kiick said after watching the Titans-Colts game. "In all honesty, I'm not really concerned. They're seven games in and have a long way to go. I can't knock them because they have won every game, but I can't imagine them doing it. They're no Patriots."
Why is anyone still talking to these fools? I have no idea. And here's an even nastier quote about the Titans by former defensive end Manny Fernandez.
"There's no need to pay attention ... I can't even tell you what the name of their quarterback is."
Yeah, exactly Manny. Because I mean I totally know who you are. By which I mean I've never heard of you until today.
The bad news though is that as long as Tennessee remains undefeated, these old losers will remain in the spotlight on some level. And naturally they'd like it to be that way, to a point.
Ironically, the most boisterous of the 1972 Dolphins — running back Eugene "Mercury" Morris — has publicly lobbied for Tennessee to keep winning. It's easy to understand why. For many '72ers, New England's success led to newfound acclaim and commercial endorsements, including a Reebok ad that aired during the Super Bowl.
Yes, they'd like Tennessee to win 14 games in a row...and then lose. For their financial gain. Classy. Just the way you'd expect champions to behave.By the way, that '72 team wasn't even that good. They played a regular season schedule of only 14 games and the winning percentage of their opponents was well below .400. They'd be killed by any team playing today.
As for me I think I'll keep popping a cork every year the Dolphins fail to reach the playoffs. The important thing is that that's seemingly been going on almost as long as the undefeated season streak. Let's hope it stays that way.
