1st BCS Rankings are out

10/16/06 in NCAAF   |   ndeddiemac   |   respect

The first BCS rankings have come out and my how many conversation topics they give us.

The #1 comes as no surprise at the Buckeyes have been there all year and show no sign of stopping. At number 2 are the Trojans who have barely snuck by teams like Washington and Arizona State the last few weeks. In fact, they are #1 in the computer rankings, with the #3 team in the BCS, Michigan, coming in at #2 and the Buckeyes 3rd according to the machines. Auburn, a week off a brutal home loss to Arkansas but a day off a huge upset of Florida comes in at 4, with their victims the Gators at # 6. 5 and 7 are the Big East duo of WVU and Louisville respectively (no Rutgers love??lol) Notre Dame, Texas and Cal round out your top 10.

It is still early but these rankings are huge for the rest of the year...thoughts?

1. Ohio State
2. USC
3. Michigan
4. Auburn
5. West Virginia

We know the OSU-Michigan winner will be in the title game. Hard to go against USC, but should they lose what an interested delimna the BCS will face.

Do you think if Auburn finished at #2, and West Virginia was undefeated at #3, Tommy Tuberville would complain about the system still? I doubt it.

He probably make a half-hearted statement feeling bad for West Virginia/Louisville while secretly doing a little dance in his head.

isnt there some stat that says the first BCS #1 never wins the national championship? Ohio st. is in trouble!

I think it was (before last year) that the #1 and the #2 in the first poll had never met in the title game meaning either OSU or USC would lose.

Ask and you shall receive.  This week's ratings will be out on Monday, since I try and have all games for the week in (including the Boise State game tonight).

Otherwise, you can look up my previous computer ratings, listed as MRI Ratings, on my site MRISports.com.  You can read a little about the history of the rankings if you follow the "About the MRI" link on the site.

My personal feelings are listed as my "AP" Ballot, and usually comes out on Wednesdays, though this week will be Tuesday, I am hoping.

Wow. Excellent site!!! I bookmarked it and will be there daily!

I can see you put a lot of time in on that site and it shows.  Thank you for the link.

Yea, my poll isn't exactly good and I am basing it on wins partially but strength of competition and results of that with a touch of bias mixed in.  Pretty much just basic

I like your polls. I'm not sure how they're done but it makes more sense to me so far. Do you have a link to yours we can check out?

Margin of victory has been eliminated from the computer polls, so that doesn't factor in.  If anyone is over-rating USC on that point, it is therefore the human polls.

Therefore, I am not sure how the computers are getting USC at #1.  My own computer poll has USC falling to 6th after this weekend, mostly based on their poor schedule to date and the small margin of victory in those cases.

Hopefully this will work itself out on the field, as I really don't understand this result so far.

Most  BCS computers have a default setting to rank USC in the top 2, and Notre Lame in the top 6, so they get a bowl game whether they earn it or not.

I doubt anyone would agree with this but if I were king for a day...
