2007 FanIQ College Football Conference Preview - ACC
8/20/07
Ah, College Football. Its the most wonderful time of the year. Better then New Years?? Most Definitely. Better then Christmas?? Definitely. Last Year was a crazy year for the ACC. Down years for usual national powerhouses like Florida State and Miami. Mediocre years for Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech and a GREAT year for Wake Forest. No one could have predicted that would have happened but it did. It seems like there is that same type of uncertainty again this year.
The Atlantic Division is probably the only division in any conference where all 6 teams have a chance to win it. That type of diversity always makes for GREAT football.
1. Boston College - Some of you might think this is a homer pick but they are the most experienced team in the conference. They return 16 starters on offense and defense and they have the Best Quarterback in the Conference. Boston College also has a very good defense with a front 7 that could match almost any team in the country and a potential All-American in DeJuan Tribble at Corner. (9-3, 6-2)
2. Florida State - Coming off of the down year last year, I expect them to come back and competed with the best again this year. Bringing in Jimbo Fisher is going to be great for Drew Weatherford and the whole team. Florida State will have an awesome defense like always, which is lead by Andrew Fluellen. (8-4, 5-3)
3. Maryland - This team has all the talent they need to win an ACC championship, they just need to put it together. I think the need to let their Junior Quarterback, Jordan Steffy develop as the starter for 1 year before they make a serious run at the division and the conference titles. This team is lead by play-makers like Darrius Heyward-Bey and Lance Ball and they will be VERY competitive this year. (8-4, 5-3)
4. Clemson - Clemson has one of the best Running Back duos in the country, if not the best but they always find a way to underachieve. I am not going to point any fingers but I think it is time for a coaching change for Clemson, to try to take them to the next level. James Davis and C.J. Spiller will both have great seasons, they will rush for over 2000 combined but Clemson will underachieve again. This team could be a Top-15 team in the country but they don't mesh very well. (7-5, 4-4)
5. Wake Forest - You usually don't see the defending conference champion in the lower half of people predictions but they lost to much to graduation. The lose 6 defense starters including Jon Abbate (1st All-ACC) and 3 starting Cornerbacks. They also lost 2 of their starting Wide Receivers. Riley Skinner will be a great QB and will do some great things in his next 3 years but he isn't surrounded with enough talent to make a run at the title again this year but who knows anything can happen in the ACC. (6-6, 3-5)
6. NC State - Many people are expecting great things from NC State and Tom O'Brien but I don't think he can turn the program around in one year. Tom O'Brien did great things for BC and I will be forever grateful but I don't think he has the right coaching style for NC State but I may be wrong. Andre Brown and Daniel Evans will lead this high powered offense but there are too many holes this year. (4-8, 2-6)
The Coastal Division is trying to keep up with the Atlantic division in parody but aren't quite there yet. There are 3 teams in "serious" contention for the division title this year and a couple other teams that are 1 or 2 years away from being contenders.
1. Virginia Tech - There were 4 or 5 players that could have left this team for the NFL last year and would have been first day picks but they stayed and have 16 returning starters and scads of impressive reserves back in the fold. The Hokies should have the ACC’s best team, top defense and be a legitimate contender to play for the national title. This team is lead by great players like Xavier Adibi and Brandon Ore and if Sean Glennon can have a break out year at the Quarterback slot, they should take the Conference easily. (11-1, 8-0)
2. Georgia Tech - Losing Calvin Johnson is a very hard blow to swallow but James Johnson thinks he can make up for what was lost in Calvin. From what I heard Taylor Bennett is a better Quarterback and leader then Reggie Ball. Georgia Tech has a few NFL quality players, Phillip Wheeler, Adamm Oliver and Tashard Choice, and will be doing everything in the power to keep up with Virginia Tech. But they will fall short. (9-3, 6-2)
3. Miami - Like Florida State, Miami will bounce back from their down year last year and compete again. The biggest question mark from Miami is will Kyle Wright be the starter and can he live up to his potential? I think that if he has a "decent" year he can lead Miami to 8 or 9 wins and if he has a "good" year, Miami will be right up there with the Hokies. But I think Virginia Tech is too good for anyone to keep up with and the Hurricanes fall to the third place slot in the division. (8-4, 5-3)
4. Virginia - The Cavaliers are one of the programs that will be in contention for the Coastal Division title in the next few years. Last year the team was filled with Freshman and that lead to some struggles but it will be great for the future. Jameel Sewell will lead this team, this year to an alright record and will be a great leader in the future. (7-5, 4-4)
5. North Carolina - The Tar Heels are the other program on the rise. Butch Davis will be huge for this program for recruiting and for game planning. He is an NFL type coach and will do great things for this program. Just have to give him 1 year to develop his great recruiting class. (5-7, 2-6)
6. Duke - Its another year for Duke that they won't want to remember. They have lost 20 in a row and I don't see that ending anytime soon. The only positive I see is that they can't reach the record of 34 straight losses this year. Don't get me wrong Thaddeus Lewis could be a good quarterback if he had some talent around him but that is the problem the lack of talent on Duke. Another year, Another 12 losses. (0-12, 0-8)
ACC Championship Game
Virginia Tech 28 - Boston College 14
The Atlantic could be won by all 6 teams and the Coastal could be won by 3 teams. This is AWESOME!
