We're just a week away from practice starting on campuses across the country. Which is also means, we're a week away from hearing way too much about players not worthy of the hype. I gave you my list of guys fitting that description. Now here's the players who won't be getting enough press.Note: I could make a laundry list of dozens and dozens of offensive lineman. But that wouldn't be a whole lot of fun. So let's just go ahead and lump all the decent O-lineman together as underrated. Onto the rest ...
FB Owen Schmitt, West Virginia
Pat White. Steve Slaton. Pat White. Steve Slaton. Pat White. Steve Slaton. They're good by themselves, but they're awesome because of Schmitt. Not to mention he does a decent job with the ball in his hands himself and can catch better than most.
RB Tashard Choice, Georgia Tech
A heckuva, heckuva, heckuva running back that might finally get his buzz. With Taylor Bennett, far less mobile than Reggie Ball, Choice should be, well, the choice on offense with his 5 yards a carry.
QB Andre Woodson, KentuckyQuestionable whether he belongs here as attention is starting to grow, but he's good enough that he deserves the same praise as John David Booty. Woodson will definitely be better at the next level.
WR Marcus Monk, Arkansas
If the Razorbacks had a more capable QB, Monk might be mentioned in the same breath as the game's best. I don't think it's a stretch to compare him to Calvin Johnson. If McFadden and Jones weren't such studs, Monk would make a good run at the receiving touchdown mark for D1. At the SEC Media Days he eluded to more use of his large WR target, so that should quench the underratedness by midseason.
S Patrick Chung, Oregon
And by safety what I really mean is Rover. That's what they call him in the Duck Defense and that's precisely what he does. Some of you Duck fans might not like this comparison, but it's clearly a compliment: he's going to follow Troy Polamalu's footsteps in making a seamless transition to the pros. But not before quarterbacking Oregon's defense to another solid bowl game.
LB Jasper Brinkley, South CarolinaWhen you're commanded by the Ol' Ball Coach, defense isn't going to get a lot of headlines. Under Spurrier the offense has yet to explode and it's surprisingly been the defense that's been a bigger factor in their competitiveness. Go ahead and give most of that credit last year to Brinkley who seemingly accounted for all tackles on defense. A LB worth watching on every snap. Maybe there's finally a purpose for ESPN Full Circle?
WR Jarrett Dillard, Rice
Sure he was an All-American last season, but I doubt many remember college football's returning touchdown leader (21). In fact, Dillard has a touchdown catch in 15 consecutive games, 3 away from Larry Fitzgerald's record.
Missouri TE's - Chase Coffman / Martin Rucker
Probably a stretch to include these two, they're good enough I think they need even more attention. The Big 12 has a plethora of solid TE's, but the Tigers lay claim to the two best. Not often a school has that at their disposal. Tight End can be a quarterbacks best friend, so expect another impressive season from Chase Daniel. Just drop it off to these two all day.
QB Matt Grothe, South Florida
Question - Best dual threat QB in the Big East? You're quick answer is probably Pat White. One problem, I said duel. Pat White can't throw. Perhaps an overstatement, he can throw, but when you can run like that why work on passing. That said, I'd feel much better about Grothe when a big pass play is needed. The Bulls are high on many fans "surprise team" list and he's the reason why.
I could have listed another two dozen players here, plenty defensive players I could have mentioned if I knew you'd even read this far. So feel free to add to my list in the comments. Let us know about your most underrated player.
