2007 NFL Draft: Re-Picking the Top 10
11/9/07

It's far too early to evaluate the 2007 NFL Draft after just 8 games. Many of the draft's eventual top performers likely haven't seen the field yet, but we're an impatient bunch and jumping to quick conclusions is careless and fun. Todd McShay gave it a shot earlier this week, so now it's our turn.

Let me know how you would re-draft knowing what you know now. Here's how I'd pick the top 10:

1. Oakland
This could be a never ending debate -- JaMarcus Russell or Adrian Peterson. You might be quick to automatically say Purple Jesus based on his performance, but here's the catch: He'd have half the amount of yards if he were in the black and silver this year. That's not to discredit AD, he's earned all his record breaking yards but some of the breathtaking runs happened because of gaping holes. The cornerstone of a program remains the QB and you have to draft the good ones when they're available. My Pick: JaMarcus Russell (I just would have worked out a deal earlier)

2. Detroit
Kevin Jones is good, Calvin Johnson will be great... but why not run over everyone with a two-headed attack that tops any other in the league (yes I'm dismissing Tatum Bell, he's a baby). My Pick: Adrian Peterson.

3. Cleveland
Nothing changes here. Calvin Johnson is tempting, clearly, but Joe Thomas will be at the base of the Browns offensive line for a long time.

4. Tampa Bay
If you could have the foresight on predicting all the running back injuries, Marshawn Lynch would make his way into the equation. I couldn't pass up Calvin Johnson with the only playmaker on the Bucs being 35 years old.

5. Arizona
Now this gets tricky. OT Levi Brown was surprisingly selected here in April and would have fit the bill if he hadn't been injured. While an offensive lineman is definitely an area of need, I'm not passing on a future Hall of Fame middle linebacker. Patrick Willis is my pick.

6. Washington
Just because the pairing of Sean Taylor and LaRon Landry is scary fun, I'd stick with the soon to be pro bowl safety.

7. Minnesota
If you can't have Adrian Peterson, it's not the end of the world to have Marshawn Lynch running all over the MetroDome.

8. Atlanta
Jamaal Anderson hasn't disappointed, but I'm going to groom an offensive tackle to protect Joey Harrington Brian Brohm. Levi Brown is the choice.

9. Miami
Yea, not Ted Ginn Jr. Areas of need: ALL. Where to go? I agree with McShay, you have to go with the youngest player with tremendous upside (ding!) in Amobi Okoye.

10. Houston
Another team where you couldn't go wrong with choices like Dwayne Bowe, Adam Carriker, or Darrelle Revis. Getting to the QB consistently can turn a bad offense offense into an officient bunch so I'm going to pair Mario Williams with Jamaal Anderson on the other side and worry about the offense later.

How would you re-do the 2007 NFL Draft?

1. Oakland - Calvin Johnson - When you're as bad as the Raiders just take the best player available.

2. Detriot - Adrian Peterson - Jon Kitna + Roy Williams + AD = Really good offense

3. Cleveland - Joe Thomas - Can never go wrong with a franchise LT

4. Tampa Bay - Marshawn Lynch - My friend, a Bucs fan, pointed out that the Caddy is always hurt, therefore he really wishes his team took AD.

5. Arizona - Levi Brown - Can't go wrong with a franchise tackle (whatever side they put him on)

6. Washington - LaRon Landry - In today's NFL, safeties are more important than CBs, plus Landry was the best defensive player available.

7. Minnesota - Brady Quinn - Best QB available, and clearly they need one.

8. Atlanta - Patrick Willis - Draft the heart of the defense this year and the heart of the offense next year.

9. Miami - Amobi Okoye - Dude is going to be good.

10. Houston - Jamaal Anderson - A great pass rush can make a defense look better than they really are (see NY Giants).
