2008 Beijing Olympics Day 2 Live Thread
Olympic Live Thread Goodness: Let's All Watch Michael Phelps Kick Butt
READ MORE:
All right everyone. Because NBC was actually able to force China to have certain events at times that would allow them to be live here in the States (meaning a TV station has more power than our government), we're going to have an Olympic live thread. From what I understand, Michael Phelps' 400 IM swim tonight will be shown live for viewers in the central and eastern time zones. Those of us out here on the west coast, or in the crazy mountain time zone, I guess avoid the comments section of this post then.

We'll also get President Bush's favorite beach volleyball duo - Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh - defending their Olympic gold effort from 2004.

So here's what's on tap this evening in primetime. As I said, some of this will be live, some of won't be. But either way, we can still make fun of how much the Chinese are doping.

Primetime: 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Coverage includes four gold-medal swimming finals (LIVE ET/CT). In the men's 400m IM, American Michael Phelps begins his quest for a record-breaking gold medal haul while 41-year-old mom Dara Torres leads Team USA in the women’s 4x100m free relay. The women's 400m IM and men's 400m free are also contested. Plus, men's gymnastics qualification and U.S. women's beach volleyball coverage, where defending Olympic champs Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh face a Japanese tandem (LIVE ET/CT).

-------

Insomniac Coverage - For Those Of You Who Want To Stay Up Super Late (again, these times correspond to whatever time zone you're in)

12:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. - On CNBC, coverage of boxing elimination-round bouts (64kg light welterweight and 69kg welterweight). Also, men's singles tennis between American first-time Olympian James Blake and Chris Guccione of Australia (LIVE ET/CT).

2:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. - On CNBC, coverage of men's singles tennis between American first-time Olympian James Blake and Chris Guccione of Australia. Also, boxing elimination-round bouts in the 64kg light welterweight and 69kg welterweight classes (LIVEET/CT).

4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. - On CNBC, boxing elimination-round bouts: Light welterweight (64kg) and welterweight (69kg).

2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. - On USA Network, men's basketball action features Spain vs. Greece (LIVE ET/CT) and Lithuania vs. Argentina (LIVE ET/CT). Coverage also includes a U.S. women's doubles badminton match against Singapore, and the equestrian team eventing dressage competition.

I don't know about everyone, but doubles badminton kicks major butt. Stay up for that.

I know her parents couldn't have known, but it scares me that there is someone out there named Hannah Miley.

If you do a late night thread, I am so there.

BTW, this is Day 2.

I hope something lame's on NBC right now, because I'm gonna need a few minutes to recover from that amazing IndyCar finish.

Actually, it's really Day 4 or 5, since women's soccer started on Wednesday I believe.

You win the Pedant Award for the day, breaking my 52 day streak.

The online streaming video is pretty sweet. Very good quality and little problems. Too bad there isn't any good on right now except Iran getting crushed in basketball.

Only during beach volleyball could the theme from Baywatch play in the background and have it make perfect sense.

F.U.A.N. just doesn't sound as cool as D.U.A.N. but I imagine it could be just as good.

Major props to Park for coming back from what happened in Athens. To come back from something so embarrsing at only 14 is impressive.

Some people stand in the darkness
Afraid to step into the light
Some people need to help somebody
When the edge of surrender's in sight..

Don't you worry!
Its gonna be alright,
Cause I'm always ready,
I won't let you out of my sight.

I'll be ready (I'll be ready)
Never you fear (no don't you fear)
I'll be ready
Forever and always
I'm always here.

Stephanie Rice can break my world record anytime, even if she ruined my planned "Don't hassle the Hoff" joke.

You know what I'll do. On each night thread i'll also list the "Late Night" sports as well. Badminton, Tug o War, and break dancing.

I did watch the pummle horse thing earlier and it looked like one of those dudes was break dancing on the horse.

Will Ferrell approved:

All right my friend, I have all the late night goodness up. Anyone else want to join me for doubles badminton? Rock on.

nbcolympics.com. You need to download Microsoft Silverlight for it to work. Keep in mind though, it doesn't show the stuff on TV. It's for dorks like me to watch random things live, like archery, badminton, and Germany-Angola basketball.

Tonights overnight events....Boxing, Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Equestrian (The absolute WORST sport ever), Archery, and Gymnastics.

Sad to not see Badmiton or Handball on the list.

Badminton's on the online streaming, along with archery, fencing, tennis, field hockey, and basketball.

I really hope I remember to sleep during the week.

I think that the entire German basketball team might have the rings shaved into their heads, with the possible exception of Chris Kaman. Which is a shame, since he's the one guy where that would be an improvement in hair style.

Because boxing will be live on TV in the late night. Like I said, they aren't overlapping online and TV, which might be why there are complaints.

Did Phelps do it with the moustache?  I guess I'll have to wait and see when they show it on NBC tonight!

I was just flipping the channels. My soon to be 6 year old daughter wanted to watch the swimming that happened to be on at the time. I did my best to explain the Olympics to her while she cheered for an American who won his heat. Then the next event comes on an they annouce the names. Hannah Miley. Her mouth dropped. She's a huuuuuuggge Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus fan. Me, I laughed my ass off at her expression when she heard the name.

It was priceless.

Well with my cabel provider, they added like 6 new HD channels for the olympics that are showing all of those events on TV tonight.

So I've noticed this thread lacks the mandatory one Brett Favre reference every hour rule.
What's up with that?

Currenlty there is a shooting final. In 2nd currently is someone from Russia. In 3rd is someone from Georgia. They obviously have guns. This might not end well.

Storming in Oklahoma?
Man, if you guys get a basketball team you should name it after that. Something sweet like the Thunder. That'd be cool.

I sense a "peace keeping" mission on the medal stand.

This play by play guy is annoying the heck out of me.  He's got a way of making it sound like we're watching a highlight recap show, even though its the whole event.

Yeah he was bad last night plus he could be one of the announcers that is in New York watching this taped event so he knows what is going to happen anyway.

I kind of want to go to bed, but in a half hour, it's handball streamed online.

So after watching the first quarter of this Spain/Greece game, I think that Team USA can definately beat both of them.

It will take a strong committment to defensive pressure on the guard and not letting them get wide open looks. Both of them are tremendous shooters.

The Blazers are going to be loaded next year...Rudy Fernandez is going to be the next Manu, but less floppy and bald.

Gotta love the halftime music... Kanye's Workout Plan (instrumental)

Priceless.

Mike Breen & Doug Collins are calling the basketball games... Doug Collins is already getting on my nerves after 1 quarter. He is really sounds like a big, smug, know-it-all jackass.

Argintina is also as floppy and whiny as their soccer team. Good thing our resident Spurs nut isn't around or that comment would somehow get turned into me bashing the Spurs for having two of the biggest floppers in the NBA...
