2008 MLB All Star Game Live Thread
Here's Two Tickets To The Game (Thread)
Good evening everyone. Sorry about the site down time before the game. Please accept these two tickets to the game thread as an apology.

Tonight we get to see if the NL can finally end its longtime All-Star Game drought. Although, admittedly, I don't like their odds. Two of their best pitchers, Lincecum and Webb, aren't going to pitch tonight. That's, uh, not good.

We'll also get to see if Josh Hamilton can hit another 28 home runs. I'm not sure he can do that.

But anyway, enjoy the game. After all, there's nothing else on. What else are you going to do?

This might just be me, I don't know.....

The whole pre-game introduction ceremonies seemed vaguely familiar - say Boston '99.

It could just be me, though.

I was being facetious. I think every article written on Lincecum should say "Lincecum has "flu-like symptoms" from being so hungover."

Hey, it's no problem with me. I'd rather not have another Atlee Hammacker scenario.

What does an assistant coach do during the All-Star Game?  I'm surprised Jim Leyland isn't lighting one up in the dugout while he's chillin'

Boy, the NL catchers are really good - at letting the AL steal whenever they want.

It's Evan?  Oh.....

In this current AL streak, there have been a number of games where the NL bullpen blew leads late in the game.  Why should this year be any different?

That would be the next best thing to the game going on and on for inning after inning with both sides running out of pitchers!

So the AL is out of position players.  Big deal.  The game is using a DH.   Unless someone gets hurt, there is no need for extra position players.  All that matters now is how many pitchers are left.

Same thing happened on the Ichiro throw from right field.  The throw beat Pujols there, but his foot hit the bag before the tag.

Ha ha.  The AL is going to have to rely on an Oriole and a Royal to pitch after Rivera.  And the NL is pinning its hopes on a Pirate batter right now.

As much as I want to see the Sox get home field advantage, it would also be kinda poetic to see Rivera get the loss.

Way to break up the double-play Tejada.  Somewhere in Vegas Pete Rose is cussing at a television.

OK, after watching the replay I'll give Tejada a break.  However, I think you still have to go to the base after the 2B runs past you.

7/15/08

Poor Uggla... gets doubled up with a runner in scoring position, and then he boots a couple easy outs. Good thing the Marlins probably won't have to worry about home field advantage this year.

Awesome throw by McLouth... but why was a catcher (Navarro) trying to score on that hit? There was only one out... he should have held up at 3rd, if you ask me. The over-aggressive baserunning is killing the AL.

Outstanding point.  Even though Navarro probably isn't the swiftest runner, you'd think he'd have a better chance on a sac fly.

7/16/08

Pat wrote:

Actually, all those calls had one thing in common.  The throw was there ahead of the runner.  Umpires are mostly automatic in that situation.  It is rare if they make the call based on actual tags of the base vs tags with the glove.

That is just more evidence that Selig is a moron.  Everyone and his brother knew he never should have let that Milwaukee game end.  If they run out of pitchers, the manager would have to deal with it.

No kidding. Kudos to Francona for being nice about it, but at this point, it's worse on Sherrill that he has to pitch so much, than it would be for Kazmir to go for a couple innings. He's a starter... that's what they do. He only went 6 on Sunday... shouldn't be THAT bad.

Question. If they can re-insert catchers, why can't they re-insert pitchers, in the event of a marathon game like this? The AL has 4 guys who are normally starters and they each only pitched 1 inning. Couldn't they come back in? I'm sure that would be better than making someone like Kazmir go for too many innings.

The problem with that is the rule would be made up on the spot.  I'm sure those pitchers have already iced and got dressed in their street clothes.  Doubtful they would come back at this point.  If the rule was in place going in, the manager could order them to remain... Just in case.

This made me laugh from BrewCrewBall

I don't know if you guys know this

But the tie breaker rules read as such:

In the event of a game that is taking way too long, Guillermo Mota will pitch for each team and whoever scores the most runs wins. After the game he shall follow Dan Uggla to the Empire State building.

I had a small taste.  In '06 during the World Series, I was visiting a friend in Ohio.  I only stayed up for ONE of the games.  It made me very happy to live in the Pacific Time Zone.  The one bad side about it is when they delay some live events for the time zone.  I wouldn't mind so much, but when the announcer keeps saying they are live it just reminds me that it ISN'T!

I'm with you, because it wouldn't really be fair... but I'm sure a few of those guys wouldn't mind warming back up. Hell... I'd bet anything that Papelbon would pitch as long as they'd let him.

Dan Uggla looks like an A leaguer tonight.  I almost feel bad for him.

Well, Kazmir means we have tie possibility potential at red level.

It will look/sound like Costas and Michaels in Baseketball.

We can only hope...

Let's get some position players pitching. The only way Uggla's night could get worse would be if he went out to pitch and got hammered.

If only that were so....

Did someone just suggest expanding the roster? Are you serious? There are enough undeserving players as it is.

that shot of jeter and francona laughing together. theyre thinking "yes! were wasting tampa's best pitcher."

But it means we can then go 20 innings and still get a tie.

Here's an idea... don't have starters pitch only one inning. I'm not trying to bash Francona, but if he hadn't had 4 starters go for only 1 each, he'd still have some inning-eaters available right now.

My suggestion: Make sure all of the first-timers get their chance to play. Beyond that, save some SP's if it's a tight game, and just be reasonable about it. If some guys don't play some years, then that's just how it is.

How about this...  After the 15th inning, the players from the "Young Stars" game become eligible to play in the Major League game.

AL better do something here, or we may a forfeit by the AL. Kazmir at most goes one more inning.

How epic would that be? NL finally wins be forfeit.

The one inning thing was more Francona doing the old Little League thing of "trying to get everyone in the game".  No other reason.  That kind of thinking is foolish.  It's what did in the 2002 game.

Somebody put Pujols in an AL uniform to end this.

Great idea, actually. Might be a little harsh on the young guys, but it would probably boost the scoring, if nothing else.

I'd take it.  Anything to end that damn streak.

That'd be a pretty awesome way to make your major league debut.

Probably the only way your guys could win it anyway...

So few people are watching this game anyway...  if they all just stopped playing no one will know until tomorrow morning!  And Bud could be safely out of town by then.

Damnit Brad Lidge, you suck.

How many times can the NL keep dipping into that "get out of certain loss free" well?

drew has to be in consideration for mvp.

JD Drew should have gotten a hit... that would have cemented the MVP for him.

BS!!!!

That umpire just wanted to go home!

Sorry.  Emotion got the better of me.  He was safe.

I'd still say he gets it, since that finish was kinda anti-climactic.

Not a bad ending.. I thought Corey may've had him.

The throw was not strong.  If it were cut off, he would have been out.

I'm thinking nerves may have gotten to him a bit, because usually his throws are better than that.  Oh well, only an exhibition home field advantage for the World Series on the line.

so im still voting for mvp at this moment..shouldnt it be closed?

That home field thing means practically nothing anyway.  It only comes into play if the series goes 7 games.  (When was the last time THAT happened?)  And even then, the advantage of batting last is very slight indeed.

well, the player i was voting for won it anyways so that doesnt matter.

Best commercial of the night? Bob Melvin, the D-Backs infield and Taco Bell's Fruitista Freeze. What took them so long to run that one?
Had I been in Arizona, I would have assumed that was a local ad. I'm not sure if I should be flattered that they picked the Diamondbacks over say the Red Sox or Yankees, or offended that they made Bob Melvin look like a fruit-obsessed moron.

It got old near the end, but that was a pretty solid game. No offensive fireworks really, but there were some pretty sweet defensive plays.

I agree... but it was still the best commercial of the night. It sucks that they waited so long to run it.

And for the record, Taco Bell is a lot bigger down south. We didn't even have one on the Cape until a few years ago. That being said, there are a bunch of snobby yuppies on Cape Cod, and they fight tooth and nail any time a big company tries to come to town. McDonalds... Starbucks... they all had to fight their battles.
