2008 NBA Draft Live Thread
Welcome To The NBA Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, And A Bunch Of Guys Whose Names I Can't Spell

As a Bulls fan I never used to get all that excited about the NBA draft. I was fortunate to be spoiled by some pretty good teams growing up. Finally, in 1999 the Bulls had the 1st overall pick and I started to think the post-Jordan era wouldn't be so bad and this draft thing was pretty cool.

Yeah, not so much.

After '99, it's been one collective debacle for the Chicago Bulls on draft night. From Chris Mihm, to Marcus Fizer, to trading Elton Brand for Tyson Chandler, to Eddy Cheeseburger with Curry, to failing to select Brandon Roy. That's just some of the mistakes (Excuse me while I dull the pain with a 10 count).

Hopefully tonight brings a breath of fresh air back to the United Center when the 1st overall pick comes up Roses. Of course, there's the mess of mediocre backcourt players remain, but for a night at least, I hope to enjoy what could be a very promising future with a special, one-of-a-kind point guard.

As for the rest of the draft, it should be wildly interesting throughout. Will Pat Riley really pass over Michael Beasley or has that just been his fun with the media? After all, none of the 'character issues' have actually come from his mouth. What will happen at spots 4, 5 and 6? Anybody's guess.

Enjoy and feel free to chat it up here. Look pretty fly, boys.

You wonder if a GM ever watched these opening commercials and thought, "That guy's a dumbass, couldn't remember one sentence. I'll take the other kid."

"One of the most successful seasons"

Uh yeah, David, as long as you're not in Seattle. And as long as you ignore the whole ongoing Donaghy thing.

Notice how David Stern had to remind us all what the New York Liberty were..."MSG, home of the New York Knicks, and the New York Liberty of the WNBA, (a women's pro basketball league supported by NBA ticket sales)."

You know what the best news is for Derrick Rose? He can get the hell out of Dodge, and no longer listen to Stuart Scott.

How do you not look at the first overall pick as a guy who can come in and help right away?

OJ Mayo was either on his way to a root canal, or he's not so thrilled about going to Minnesota.

I wonder if Gordon fell one more spot if the Bucks would have selected him to reunite with Sampson.

I just got kicked out of ESPN draft chat for asking Westbrook if he was going to be the next Tyus Edney.

I should've just come to the Q first.  Hi! ::wave::

I see the Knicks picked up Big Cock. No seriously, that's his nickname.

Wonder if Knicks fans will chant that or "Big Flop" next season. Either way, should be hilarious.

Considering how a lot of the Europeans play, "Big Flop" would be fitting.

..or maybe "Big Soft"?

So, I'm just going to throw this out there. I say Robin Lopez doesn't get drafted at all.

First green room dude ever to not get drafted.

I'm hoping they brought a spinoff, the Stuart Scott Heckling Society of Gentlemen.

Wait, don't the Bobcats have Ray Felton, and nothing outside of Okafor in the front court? Not sure how they can pass on Robin Brook (whatever) Lopez there.

Robin Lopez's Wiki page. In case it's deleted soon:

Robin Byron Lopez (born April 1, 1988 in North Hollywood, California) is a 7'0" American basketball player who played for the Stanford Cardinal in the Pacific-Ten Conference of the NCAA. He is the identical twin brother of current teammate Brook Lopez, who happens to be mentally retarded, but got selected 10th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets.

No, I didn't do it.

I'm a fraud like Simmons when it comes to college basketball, except I don't use a national platform to make sweeping generalizations about players I saw maybe three times.

How many championships will the Blazers win in the next 10 years? I say at least 3. GM is a brilliant.

This is why I no longer root for the Indiana Pacers.

They trade J.O. to Toronto for Ford and the 17.  They now have Ford and Tinsley.

Then, they draft Bayless.  Obviously, Tinsley needs to go.  Will be tough to get rid of him.  Having Ford help break in Bayless is nice.

Then, they trade Bayless away, because apparently the front office is sold on Brandon Rush.  Brandon Rush is a tremendous basketball player, but the Pacers have Danny Granger and Mike Dunleavy.  Mike Dunleavy cannot be traded, because nobody wants his contract -- there's no bang for the buck.  There's no way Brandon Rush starts over Mike Dunleavy as long as Mike Dunleavy is in Indiana.  So, they have a short-term bench player in Rush, and coming with him in the deal is Jarrett Jack.  You're still left with the problem of dealing away Jamaal Tinsley, because Jarrett Jack is not a third string point guard.

To top it off, they now have the rights to Roy Hibbert at 17.  Seth Greenberg just said on Fox Sports Radio that Roy Hibbert is Brendan Haywood-like, because all Roy Hibbert does is eat space.  Greenberg tried to defend Hibbert for not being able to rebound, because at 7'2", 280 lbs., it's extremely difficult to rebound.  The Pacers should've ended up with Darrell Arthur at 17 to replace the outgoing O'Neal.

Now, they have a dynamic duo of Jeff Foster and Roy Hibbert up front, Brandon Rush backing up Mike Dunleavy, and Jamaal Tinsley's ludicrous contract to unload on some unsuspecting and incompetent victim -- perhaps Chris Wallace (if they end up with Love, that'd be grand).  Then if/when Tinsley is gone, they're left with T.J. Ford -- not a franchise point guard -- and Jarrett Jack -- not a franchise point guard.

To quote Simmons, I'm going to go light myself on fire now, even though I don't care about the Pacers anymore, but still sort of do.

Agree.  Kevin Pritchard is so on top of things, it's frightening.  The West gets better.  The rich get richer.

I wish I was like 6'6 and I'd go to the draft and whenever some less known guy got taken I'd to down there and shake the commissioners hand.

Better than "not being able to attend" like the Sixers draft pick.

OMG.  Kevin Pritchard is obscene.  He gets Darrell Arthur at 27.  Screw this kidney business.  Stephen A. just pointed out Arthur never missed a game at Kansas.  To all those teams 15-27 that passed up on him -- YOU ARE STUPID.  I don't know why Portland needs Arthur, but why not?  The guy is an asset.  Kevin Prtichard loves assets.  My GOD this team is loaded.

Does anyone know if DeAndre Jordan is in the Green Room? That could be another Magic Lamp.

Certainly.  And the majority of their players are on their way to improving.  But the fact that Pritchard is stockpiling talent is very intelligent, because that gives him in-season and off-season leverage to wheel and deal (as only Kevin Pritchard does) for role players and veterans who will fit specific roles the team needs as time moves along.  They're in a very flexible situation.  And with the core of players they have now -- especially Roy, Aldridge, and Oden -- putting the pieces together shouldn't be rocket science.  If I was a disaffected or non-partisan fan, I'd want to jump on this bandwagon now.

I guess Seattle/OKC are whatever city would want them, has no idea how to draft.  Why would any team take Westbrook at #4?  I have no idea why he was so hyped to be in the lottery.  He looks like a sure fire D-Leaguer to me.

I'm shocked that JR Giddeons got picked in the at all, especially in the 1st round.  He was nothing but trouble at KU and that's why he got kicked off the team.  He's got amazing talent but you can't play from Jail.

"Two league sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves have reached an agreement in principle with the Memphis Grizzlies that will send the draft rights of Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner to the Grizzlies in return for the draft rights to Kevin Love, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins."
