2008 World Series Game 5 Preview: More Of The Same For Phillies Or Redemption For Rays?
After Game 4 Romp, Phillies Practicing Catch And Release Of Rays. Final Release To Come In Game 5
READ MORE:
MLB
It's pretty well known in the sports world that Philly fans are a different breed.  They've had to bear the burden to many titles, some appropriately earned.  From "Classless" to "Dedicated", they've heard them all.  Thankfully for the fans of the Phillies, their team is about as hard-headed as they are.

Despite the national push toward the coronation of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as the champions of the world and the title of "Ultimate Feel Good Story of 2008", the Philadelphia Phillies aren't cooperating in the least.  With a total smack-down of the Rays in Game 4, the Phillies are one win away from coup to wrestle perhaps both titles away from the sting-less Rays.

After forgetting to pack their bats on the trip to Tampa Bay for Games 1&2, the Philly bats have come alive at home to the tune of 15 runs and 19 hits.  Shoot, even Joe Blanton decided to swing a stick for the Phils, contributing a home run in Game 4.

So what does all this mean for Game 5?  Can the Phils seal the deal at home with their ace, Cole Hamels, on the mound?  Or will the Rays rebound and find the offensive stroke that allowed them to establish an American League record for most home runs in a postseason?

The Rays Can Win IF:
They find a way to get hits.  If the Rays are going to keep their magical season alive, they're going to have to hit.  And hit.  And hit.  (And maybe hit some more)  Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena are hitless in the series and have struck out a combined nine times in the past two games.  Obviously, it's a problem when your team's third and fourth batters nearly have more strikeouts (9) than your team has hits (11).

Another thing that has to happen for the Rays is that Scott Kazmir has to pitch lights-out.  The Phils have finally gotten on a roll and none of the Rays pitchers have had an answer for them.  Garza paid dearly for some missed pitches, as did Sonnastine.  Kazmir is going to have to hit his spots and hope for the best.  He did a great job in Game 1 and he'll have to have a repeat performance to keep his team alive.

The Phillies Can Win IF:
They avoid all they hoopla around the city.  Fox has spent all weekend reminding national viewers that the Phillies, Eagles, and The Who concert made for a jam-packed day in Philadelphia.  If that wasn't bad enough, a Philly television station decided to replay Game 6 of the 1980 World Series.  How's that for pressure?  Not only is this title-starved city depending on you to end this drought, but they replay a game that has pretty much been burned in the memory of every Philadelphia sports fan since October 21, 1980.  For all the stories about that 1980 team, including from resident AARP representative Jamie Moyer, the Phillies have to stay focused on a very dangerous Rays team.  If they can maintain the focus for Game 5, with Hamels on the mound, they have an excellent shot to end the series in front of the hometown fans.

So what will happen in Game Five?  I'd be shocked if the Rays came out flat.  Joe Maddon seems to be able to find ways to rally his team.  They play hard for him and I assume they'll play like there's no pressure on them.  And who knows how deep Maddon will dive into his bag of tricks?  Let's not forget he was a coach for the Angels when they unleashed the Rally Monkey on America.  Are we in for another similar treat?

Will that enthusiasm be enough to get Maddon's team back to Tampa for a Game 6?  If I were a betting man, I'd say no.  The Phils are tearing the cover off of the ball.  They may not light up Kazmir like a jack-o'-lantern on Halloween night, but they should be able to manage a few runs for the cause.  With Cole Hamels on the mound, that might be all they need.  My prediction is that the only monkey on display in Philly Monday night will be property of the Philadelphia Zoo.

I made the mistake in Game 1 of still picking the Rays against Cole Hamels...obviously, I will not be doing that again.

Yeah, you're not alone.   Lots of people have been counting the Phils out.

Even down 3-1, right now 52% of FanIQ users are still picking the Rays tonight.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised, as the Phillies weren't even supposed to compete in this series.

Haters......

I'm going with a 4-3 Phils win tonight.

The Rays also have to do better on defense. I watched a condensed version of the ALCS Game 7. That Rays team and the World Series Rays team are totally different in how they carry themselves on the field. That being said, "Let's Go RAYS!"

I beg to differ that the Rays have a better defense than the Phillies.  The Phillies have one of the best infields in all of MLB, led by Gold Glover Jimmy Rollins.  Who led all SS in MLB fielding % and least amount of errors at .988 and 7.  At 3rd base is Pedro Feliz, about as close to a Gold Glover as one could be, without having one, and should win his 1st Gold Glove this year.  He led the NL in both fielding % and least amount of errors at .974% and 8, and was 2nd overall in MLB in the latter stats behind Troy Glaus.  Finally, Chase Utley's defense is overshadowed by his offensive production, but is an above average 2nd baseman. He finished with the 3rd best fielding % among 2nd baseman in the NL.  All 3 of the outfielder's have cannon's for arms, led by Victronio who led the NL last year in assists with 20 in RF, but moved to CF and finished 6th in MLB among CF in fielding % at .994 and 7th in assists with 7.  Burrell is one of the best fundamental Left Fielders in the league.  In 2008, he led all of MLB in both fielding % and assists at .991% and 12.  Finally, Werth started 73 games in RF, did not commit an error and had 7 assists

I do not know how one can justify the Rays are an overall better defensive team than the Phillies.  There are two positions where I feel there is a toss up, CF and 2nd Base.  I will admit that BJ Upton is one of the better Center fieldiers in MLB, and led all CF in assists with 16; however, Victoronio had a better fielding %.  Furthermore, Victornio's assists could be down this year because baserunner's respected his arm after emerging last year; where on the other hand, Upton is where Victoronio was last year where runners are learning to respect his arm.  Finally, the only other postion that I would agree where the Rays could have an edge at is 2nd Base with Iwarmura did have a better fielding % and commited less errors.

Hey now, there are other factors to be noted in this series besides the mistakes the Rays made last night.  Like for instance the weather, they are not use to such wet cold and the game Saturday night should have actually been held on Sunday and so forth....I think both teams are excited to be there and also a bit shocked to be in their own shoes!  I will admit it was to watch some plays last night but something else that I'm sure the Rays found to be discouraging was some of the calls being made by the blind umps!  I means was Rollins really safe at 3rd, umm..NO HE was OUT like a light!
As far as loosing money on bets made on the Rays well - - shame shame shame on you.  You are not suppose to make bets like that anyway, I mean if you have nothing better to do with your money than that please share, I'll take it and pay for my school text books with it.  With all of this being said I'll say "Let's go Rays, and play some ball!  Batter up!"
