2008-2009 Bowl Season Begins With 4 Games: BYU, Navy, Fresno State All Looking To Win Big
The Bowl Season Begins With A Bit Of A Whimper, But At Least There's Football On Saturdays Again [Live Thread]
Bowl season is one of the best times of the sports year, behind March Madness, the NFL playoffs, and very few other seasons. Today, it officially begins. If you're watching the games, this is where you can chat it up with the others who are doing the same.

There aren't any real marquee match-ups today, but there are some pretty good looking games. Here are the match-ups:

Eagle Bank Bowl
Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs Navy Midshipmen
11:00 AM EST, ESPN

This game is a rematch of an earlier game between these two teams. In the original, Navy beat Wake Forest on the road, 24-17. The Demon Deacons have revenge on the mind, and are actually favored to win this one by about a field goal. Navy hasn't allowed a point in their last two games.

81% of FanIQ picked Wake Forest to win.

New Mexico Bowl
Fresno State Bulldogs
vs
Colorado State Rams

2:30 PM EST, ESPN

In the 2nd game of the day, Fresno State plays Colorado State in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Bulldogs had a bit of a disappointing season, with 4 of their 5 losses coming in games that many thought they should have won. In hindsight, the loss to Wisconsin was a pretty bad one, Hawaii and Nevada were bad losses at home, and even on the road, Louisiana Tech was beatable. Colorado State, on the other hand, did about as much as they could with the schedule they had. In the middle of the rankings in the Mountain West Conference, their only losses were to top-20 teams, and rival Colorado, from the Big 12.

This looks to be a good game, but in the end, Fresno State is just a better team. The only question is whether or not they'll be up for this game. Only one way to find out.

90% of FanIQ picked Fresno State to win.

MagicJack St. Petersburg Bowl
Memphis Tigers vs South Florida Bulls
4:30 PM EST, ESPN2

In arguably the best named bowl game out there, the Memphis Tigers and the South Florida Bulls came into the MagicJack Bowl in the completely opposite way. South Florida is probably a bit disappointed with their bowl, as they finished the season with a pretty rough stretch, losing 5 of their last 7 after starting 5-0. Memphis, on the other hand, started the season with 3 straight losses, but then went 6-3 to finish at .500 on the season. They're probably pumped just to be there. But much like Colorado State, they might just be completely outmatched in this one, as South Florida is a much more talented team.

91% of FanIQ picked South Florida to win.

Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl
#16 Brigham Young Cougars vs Arizona Wildcats
8:00 PM EST, ESPN

There's not much better than seeing BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall cozying up next to a Vegas showgirl. I'm sure the Stormin' Mormon faithful in Utah will be excited to see this. Las Vegas is the best place ever for a BYU bowl game. The Cougars are another team coming off a bit of a disappointing season. After starting the season 6-0 and creeping up to the #9 spot, they lost to TCU, and then finished with a loss to Utah to finish 10-2. They probably should have gotten a better bowl game than this, but this is what they've got. They're in a no-win situation now, playing a talented Pac-10 team in a game that everyone thinks they should win, even though Arizona could still sneak one out. Max Hall and the offense should do fine, however, and get BYU a win.

75% of FanIQ picked BYU to win.

I like how there's a photo of the USF player not catching the football. Seems about right for teams playing bowl games on Dec. 20.

Great Game to start the Bowl Season with Wake and Navy battling it back and forth the entire game, with 3 lead changes, and Wake ended up on top at the end of the game.  Hopefully, the remaining 33 games will be this close.

It was sad to see Fresno State give the game away.  Their play-calling was bizzare.  They were blowing Colorado State off the ball, and all of a sudden they got "creative."  Their offensive coordinator outsmarted himself.
