Game of the Day Preview: No. 18 Clemson at Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons, whose postseason aspirations are on life support with a back-loaded schedule in sight, have their backs against the wall after injuries and suspensions have plagued the starting lineup.
Whereas Clemson cannot afford a slip-up or its desires for a second straight conference championship will immediately be put to rest. The Tigers have won three in a row by an average margin of 17, while Wake Forest has lost two of three and has scored just 19.0 points per game during that time.
What to expect with Clemson: Tajh Boyd to hook up with Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins. A lot. This doesn't come to much of a surprise, as the Tigers have done this throughout the season. Wake Forest is susceptible to the big play, and that's what this offense is all about. Boyd racked up 343 yards and two touchdowns in last year's contest, and I wouldn't be surprised to see those numbers matched or exceeded tonight.
What to expect with Wake Forest: An attempt to establish a running game. The Wake Forest offense is what it is on paper: lacking. Both the passing and rushing game rank among the bottom of the conference, and neither have found much consistency throughout the season. But if the Deacons want any chance of pulling off the upset, they need to attack the lanes with backs Josh Harris and Deandre Martin in hopes of keeping the Clemson offense off the field.
Prediction: This one is going to get ugly and fast. Wake Forest compiled 16 points and 213 yards of total offense against Virginia last week in a win, but I guarantee the defense isn't going to hold Clemson to 10 points. The Deacons don't have the guns to hang with the Tiger offense, plain and simple.
