They're going to have to prove that very fact if they are to make a historic run into the playoffs, because those two available Wild Card spots aren't going to any team in this division.

The NFL writers over at ESPN gave the Giants a conservative bump, putting New York at 22. They pointed out that Green Bay was missing two cornerbacks this past Sunday. I'm pretty sure that the Packers were also without another pivotal player, not that those facts in any way lessen New York's victory when it comes to the standings.

Senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco has a lot more faith in the Giants than did those putting together the most recent ESPN power rankings. Prisco ranked New York at 17, and he had this to say about the team: “At 4-6, they are making a push to get into the division race. They have to beat the Cowboys this week to stay there.” They'll absolutely be a playoff atmosphere at MetLife Stadium this coming Sunday.

Frank Schwab hadn't yet jumped on the Giants bandwagon, and that didn't change after New York won for the fourth consecutive game. He did give head coach Tom Coughlin credit for what the Giants have achieved after starting 0-6, but that wasn't enough to keep Schwab from putting New York at any higher than at 24.

Former head coach and FOX NFL analyst Brian Billick listed the Giants at 16. The New York defense has been maybe the best in all of the league during the team's current streak, a fact pointed out by Billick: “The Giants have won four straight and are only allowing 11.8 points per game during this streak.” That unit has only surrendered two touchdowns in the past four games.

Mike Florio, who ranked the Giants at 18, had this to say: “Yep, Tom Coughlin does his best coaching when on the hot seat.” No disrespect to Mr. Florio intended, but Coughlin will have the final say on when his days with the franchise are done.

Hank Gola, like Billick, has the Giants at the 16 spot. “And here they come,” Gola wrote about New York. Here they come, indeed, but it all could come to a screeching halt when the Giants host a good Cowboys team.

I once again found myself torn when ranking the Giants. No 4-6 team is playing better at the moment, and New York is well within reach of first place in the division. It's hard, however, to forget how bad this team looked throughout the first month and a half of the season.

That the Giants still haven't played what I would call a “complete game” is a reason for concern.

One football person I respect has told me that Big Blue fans should only really get excited if the team manages to get back to .500. That's fair to a point. A win on Sunday wouldn't mean much for the Giants if they don't get the job done against the Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers. New York has done a great job of attacking one game at a time during this run.

That must continue if the Giants are going to have a December to remember.
