The New York Giants are technically still in the playoff hunt.
Odds are that the Giants will soon be eliminated from postseason play, perhaps as quickly as this coming Sunday when New York is on the road against the San Diego Chargers. There is something to be said for a team that started out at 0-6 winning five of six, and the Giants showed plenty of heart and fight on Sunday night. Did that earn them significant bumps in NFL power rankings?
Where the New York Giants are in Week 14 NFL power rankings: ESPN
The NFL writers over at ESPN see little hope for New York playing in January: “With no games remaining against the Eagles or Cowboys, and the NFC West and South producing wild-card locks, the Giants need a miracle to make the playoffs.” The truth hurts sometimes, Big Blue fans. ESPN has the Giants at 22 in the website's latest power rankings.

Senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco was slightly kinder to the G-Men, putting the Giants at 20 in his list. He, like those over at ESPN, also pointed out New York's cold reality: “They have a pulse. Barely.” Considering what occurred in September and October, fans of this franchise will take it.

I think Frank Schwab was a bit too harsh on the team during New York's four-game winning streak. Nevertheless, he was spot on in pointing out the obvious: “Someone, anyone, explain to me why that putrid Sunday night game wasn’t flexed out. I get it, two big markets for ratings, but that doesn’t mean we should all suffer.” Schwab has the Giants at 23 in his current power rankings.

Former NFL head coach and current analyst Brian Billick bumped New York five spots all the way up to 18. Billick gave Justin Tuck, who had four sacks in the Sunday Night Football victory over the Washington Redskins, some love. Tuck has played his best overall football of the season in the past two weeks, and I expect to see more solid performances from him so long as the he stays healthy.

Mike Florio presented an interesting opinion while ranking the Giants at 22: “Just making it to the playoffs this year would be a bigger upset than either of their Super Bowl wins.” I agree with that statement.
I also don't envision the Giants earning a postseason berth.

Hank Gola of the NYDN points out that those in the locker room of the Giants will not quit on head coach Tom Coughlin. That right there tells you why Coughlin will exit the franchise only when he is good and ready to do so. He has earned it. Gola put New York at 19.
It was just a few years ago when Coughlin did all he could to keep his team focused despite the fact that the Giants didn't control their playoff fate. New York is not thinking 2014 NFL Draft, at least not yet. Eli Manning said it before the kickoff of the SNF match-up: The Giants want to close the season out with as many wins as possible. Whatever else happens around the league happens.
New York fans had better get those letters in to Santa and soon.
