No, really.

New York heads into the Week 9 Bye just two games back of first place in the NFC East. Winners of two straight, the Giants have finally showed some life on both sides of the football. The team's offensive line has been better, and there have even been brief flashes of the Big Blue Wrecking Crew that helped the franchise win two titles in five years. How much will all of that mean when it comes to NFL power rankings?

The ESPN NFL writers did not feel that the Giants deserved to move in power rankings this time around. New York remains at 29. That piece addresses the biggest reason fans of the team can have hope at the halfway point of the season: “Don't look now, but Big Blue is (somehow, some way) two games out in the atrocious NFC East.”

Crazier things have happened, everybody.

Senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco also mentions New York's new playoff life when listing the Giants at 23 in his latest power rankings: “At 2-6, they are only two games out of first place. Two.” Prisco has the Washington Redskins at 26, the Philadelphia Eagles at 20, and the Dallas Cowboys at 11. That last one surprises me a lot considering that the 'Boys are 4-4.

Frank Schwab isn't all that impressed with the Giants. He moved New York up a single spot to 28th. Schwab wants to see the Giants beat a team that has at least a .500 record before he shoots them up power rankings. I can understand that. Neither the Minnesota Vikings nor the Eagles are lighting it up this fall.

Former head coach and current NFL analyst Brian Billick bumped New York up from 29 to 25 in his Week 9 power rankings. Rather than mention that the Giants are somehow in the playoff race, Billick pointed out that New York didn't turn the ball over. Eli Manning avoiding interceptions will be key for the Giants remaining on a winning streak after the off week.

Mike Florio chose to focus on how bad the division is in ranking the Giants at 24th in his list: “The phrase 'hottest team in the NFC East' doesn’t have the sizzle it used to.” That is a very accurate statement. Perhaps most surprising about the situation is that there is nothing to indicate that the division is getting much better between now and the end of 2013.

Hank Gola had just two words to say in ranking the Giants at 26: “Baby steps.” You do have to learn to crawl before you can learn to run.

Nobody should have been expecting to see New York in the top 20 of any NFL power rankings this time around. Yes, the Giants are within shouting distance of the Cowboys, but they also have yet to beat a winning team this season. Tom Coughlin and company still have a lot of work to do if New York is to approach even .500 let alone a playoff spot.
