With their NFC Championship Game against the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers most certainly didn’t need the negative publicity arising from a recent source. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree voluntarily went in for questioning by the police regarding an investigation on sexual assault allegations, his attorney Joshua Bentley confirmed a day after the initial reports on Friday.
"Michael fully co-operated with the inspectors and will continue to do so throughout this investigation," stated Joshua Bentley in a brief statement released to the Associated Press.
Michael Crabtree has been accused of sexual battery charges by a woman, tracing back to an incident that allegedly took place at a city hotel only a few hours after the San Francisco 49ers’ playoff win over the Green Bay Packers last Sunday, the police released in a statement.
According to the police, Michael Crabtree was neither detained nor arrested during the course of the investigation and he voluntarily met the authorities with his lawyer present during the questioning.
"Michael Crabtree has been interviewed with his lawyer and is very cooperative with our investigation." said San Francisco police spokesperson Gordon Shyy.
Michael Crabtree also agreed to be available to the police for further questioning regarding the investigation.
The police department’s Special Victims unit is leading the investigation into the sexual assault allegations against Michael Crabtree. The investigators will forward their findings to the District Attorney's Office for reviewing and determining if the as to whether or not it carries enough weight for charges to be filed.
The San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke released a statement acknowledging the team’s awareness of the situation.
“We are aware of the allegation against Michael and understand that he has fully cooperated with authorities,” said Trent Baalke. “The 49ers take such matters very seriously. We will have no further comment at this time as the legal process is ongoing."
Michael Crabtree flew with the team to Atlanta on Friday, and the investigation is not expected to impact his availability for Sunday’s game which brings the San Francisco 49ers at the doorstep of the Super Bowl.
The former Texas Tech University player Michael Crabtree was the San Francisco 49ers’ leading receiver with 85 catches for 1105 yards (a career-best number and franchise-first since Terrell Owens in 2003) while logging nine touchdowns as well. Michael Crabtree’s season highlight included a single-game record of 172 yards on eight receptions in the final regular season week win over Arizona Cardinals.
During the Divisional Championship game last weekend, Michael Crabtree had a huge impact with nine receptions for 119 yards and two touchdowns against the Green Bay Packers.
