San Francisco 49ers linebacker Darius Fleming is having a hard time staying on field this offseason. Fleming had been activated off the team’s PUP list just a few days ago after tweaking his left knee during the 49ers’ offseason workout program. Now Fleming headlines another potentially serious injury story coming out of the 49ers’ training camp.
Fleming was working on kick return went he sustained the knee injury and fell to the ground clearly in pain. As Fleming was being tended by the 49ers’ staff of trainers, his teammates also tried to console him. Fleming did not return to the field and was accompanied by defensive lineman Ian Williams on the sidelines for the rest of the practice, according to 49ers beat writers reporting, play-by-play, hit-by-hit, catch-by-catch and fumble-by-fumble from the team’s training camp, via Twitter.
The second-year player opened training camp on the PUP list before being quickly activated on the first practice Thursday. This early activation was expected to be a huge plus for Fleming to step right into the completion for a roster spot after sitting out last season with an ACL injury.
Fleming tore his ACL in the left knee during rookie minicamp last year. He injured the same knee during minicamp this June, but the injury wasn’t considered serious back then. Fleming was previously  expect to fit in a new role on the 49ers’ defense in the 2013 season, with the team moving him from  the outside to inside linebacker this offseason.
However, training camp seems to be taking a toll on the players’ health.
Wide receiver Ricardo Lockette also reportedly suffered a right hip injury during Sunday’s practice. Lockette pulled up on a receiving pattern after experiencing pain in the hip. He sat out just 10-15 minutes before returning to practice, but Lockette still seemed to be experiencing some discomfort. There is still no word on his status from the 49ers.
Fellow receiver Kyle Williams sat out Sunday’s practice after suffering a hamstring injury the day before. Although Williams tweeted he was fine, it’s not surprising that 49ers wanted to give the fourth-year player a precautionary day off after being activated from the PUP list around the same time as Fleming.
Rookie receiver Quinton Patton still had a cast on his left hand during practice, and sported a blue jersey which means he wasn’t catching passes or taking part in contact drills.
The 49ers will get a much needed break tomorrow, with next practice scheduled for Tuesday.
