The 49ers traded up to take safety Eric Reid from LSU. Reid is a strong athlete who can come up and play the run with toughness. He likes to come into the box and last year he recorded 92 tackles. He brings athleticism and physicality to an already athletic and physical 49ers roster.
The 49ers gave up their first round pick (#31) and their third rounder in order to get Reid.
San Francisco is coming off of an 11-4-1 season and a trip to the Super Bowl. They filled a need earlier in the offseason by trading for Anquan Boldin and the Niners had 13 draft picks to work with, so they were a favorite to move up. Clearly, this is a guy the niners front office had their eye on to replace safety Dashon Goldson, who is no longer with the team.
The 49ers will also be picking again at #34 overall, a pick they received in exchange for Alex Smith.
They would also benefit from defensive line and wide receiver depth as Justin Smith isn’t getting younger and they are still waiting for AJ Jenkins, last year’s first round pick and potential vertical threat, to develop.
