49ers strike 1-year deal with P Anthony Santella, add 12 UDFAs
On the list the name that most notable jumps out is British discus thrower Lawrence Okoye, who joins the NFL as a defensive end. Other notable players in the list include offensive tackle Luke Marquardt and long snapper Kevin McDermott, who worked out for the San Francisco 49ers, before the NFL draft, at their Santa Clara headquarters. The 6-8, 315-pound Luke Marquardt will have an opportunity to compete for a backup role to San Francisco 49ers’ offensive tackles Kenny Wiggins and recently signed free agent Adam Snyder.
Free agent running back Chuck Jacobs also visited the San Francisco 49ers at the local pro day.
The San Francisco 49ers also announced the signing of punter Anthony Santella, who signed a one-year deal with the team. The 6-2, 190-pound Anthony Santella entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers in 2011. However, after spending training camp with Carolina Panthers, Anthony Santella was released before the start of the 2011 season.
The former University of Illinois product Anthony Santella was named to the First-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and to the second-team by the media during his senior year. Anthony Santella finished his collegiate career at Illinois ranking second in both career punts and career punting yardage with 8,974, and finished fourth in school history with punting yardage at 40.8.
The 25-year-old Anthony Santella will take some load off All-Pro Andy Lee as the San Francisco 49ers continue to explore options at punt returner.
