I had written "Hurricanes fans can Calm Down... a Little" only yesterday, and now half of my point has been answered in a day. Chad LaRose has signed a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes just today for 2 years, notching 1.5 million in the '09-'10 season, 1.9 million in the '10-'11 season.
“Chad has grown into a key player for our franchise,” said Jim Rutherford, general manager of the Hurricanes. “He had his best year last season and is an important penalty killer and popular player in our locker room and with our fans.”
Rutherford has his ways of getting what he wants, doesn't he? Notice how he said this earlier yesterday on Chad's subject:
"It's not going to happen. I informed Morris (Patrick Morris, LaRose's agent) that we had another deal we were working on, that I was giving him a courtesy call. He said he would run everything by Chad and call back in an hour. I waited, but I never got a call back. Obviously, they have a deal somewhere else. So we're working on signing another free agent. It's time to move on."
But then, this afternoon, Chad signs. Was there more to be seen from an outsider's perspective? Did Rutherford's readiness to move on trigger Morris to think over staying in Carolina? Or were things with the other possible buyers just that simple: nothing was as good as the Canes offer? That might not ever be answered.
Chad's contract cannot be thought over too long though. There is still lots to do. Chad is back in Carolina for 2 years, just like Erik Cole. But there are still players who are searching the free market, such as Ryan Bayda and Tuomo Ruutu. It is highly unlikely though that they will have another place in mind, and things have be going well with working out deals with Carolina in past weeks. They could just be taking there time, and giving most Canes fans a good scare (or heart attack, which ever works).
Chad is settled, and so is Cole, now it is time to start looking at other players, though the list isn't that much longer.
Things have been going exceptionally well for the Hurricanes, if I could say so myself.
