The State of Washington, what a miserable place to live right now for sports fans. In the past 12 months we have lost our NBA team, watched our Seahawks play like parakeets with their wings clipped last season and then follow that up with a miserable start this year. The Mariners can't even lose well enough to earn the #1 pick, and a promising starting pitcher in next years draft; they somehow managed to finish one game ahead of the Washington Nationals. Oh, did I mention they are the first MLB team to lose 100 games while spending 100 million dollars on player salaries? We are so proud of that distinction. They have also managed to capture national attention by wanting to take out their own all-star, and record breaking outfielder because "he doesn't dive after balls in the gap." Ichiro is so stinkin' fast that if he can't catch it on the run, it isn't gonna do him any good to dive after it. Besides he might get hurt doing that. Which brings me to another point, there is a huge controversy right now in the papers, and on sports talk radio 950 KJR, about whether UW quarterback Jake Locker should play another position since he broke his thumb thowing a block this past weekend in a losing effort against Stanford. But Jake's thumb aside, the biggest story this week is "should UW fire Coach Willingham now, next week or in December?" What a disparaging moment in time. Well, we still have some hope with the Seahawks this season but it seems all else is lost. Guess I'll keep rooting for the Longhorns and watching High School football (at least those fans still have passion about their teams).
