A Really Early Look Ahead To The NFL Draft: Who Should Miami Take?
12/6/07
Of course, it is way too early for us to be talking NFL Draft, considering the regular season isn't over. But with the college football season at it's end, and the Miami Dolphins obviously being the #1 pick, I pose the question, "who should the Dolphins take in April?"Who you think they SHOULD pick likely depends on what draft strategy you believe is more effective. Many people go by needs, fixing your weaknesses, while other simply pick the "best" player on the board, regardless of the position. Let's look at the Dolphins many problems by position, and the top prospects in college.
Quarterback: This depends on how much confidence the Dolphins have on John Beck, who they drafted last year in the second round. Logic dictates no need to draft a QB, but if they don't believe Beck will work out, maybe they go after Andre Woodson, Matt Ryan, or Brian Brohm?
Running Back: Ronnie Brown was having a beastly year before injury, and with his talent, running back certainly isn't a need. But many consider junior HB Darren McFadden the best player in college.
Wide Receiver: They have nothing at wide receiver, but can you see them picking another one high after drafting Ted Ginn Jr. last year? But with Marty Booker as your best WR, you may be tempted to add DeSean Jackson to your franchise.
Offensive Line: The Phins line hasn't been as awful as you'd expect for a 0-12 team, and they have had the same five linemen start every game. However, Vernon Carey and L.J. Shelton aren't exactly the greatest tackles. Perhaps Jake Long becomes the choice?
Defensive Line: Jason Taylor is still a beast, but the rest of that line is pretty bad, and is a big reason they have one of the NFL's worst run D's. DT's Keith Traylor and Vonnie Holiday are both old and past their prime, and Matt Roth is less than stellar at the other end spot. With Glenn Dorsey, Chris Long, and Calais Campbell each looking to go high, they could very well choose a defensive lineman.
Linebackers: Zach Thomas is getting old and injury prone, Joey Porter isn't young either, and Channing Crowder has yet to fully develop. Dan Connor and James Laurinaitis are both out there, but are either really #1 quality?
Cornerbacks: The Dolphins secondary is certainly less than stellar, and they don't have a #1 corner (or really a #2 corner). But they'd probably need to trade down if they want a corner, as there isn't any projected very high.
Safety: Injury decimated their safety position this year, but even before then they didn't have that great of a group. Could Kenny Phillips be the target?
With all of these factors, I ultimately see the Dolphins going defensive line and taking Glenn Dorsey, LSU's stud DT. Who do you think they'll ultimately take, and who do you think they SHOULD take?
