Road to Recovery a short one for AJ Allmendinger
Although AJ completed all the steps dictated by NASCAR to complete the Road to Recovery, he was released by Penske Racing on August 1st, and Sam Hornish Jr is driving the 22 car for the rest of the 2012 Season.
Apparently, Roger Penske will consider giving AJ a second chance, however. He invited AJ to Sonoma last weekend for the finale of the IndyCar Season. Ryan Briscoe has yet to re-sign with Penske for the coming year, and the word is that Penske is considering AJ for that position.
AJ's teammate from the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Michael Shank, has also extended an invitation to AJ to compete in the Grand Am Series. AJ has said he is considering his options before making a decision.
While I am impressed and pleased with AJ's success to date, one thing is clear to me. AJ may have to work his way back through the ranks before he will be considered for Sprint Cup Series ride. Just because NASCAR is satisfied with AJ's progress doesn't mean a team owner or sponsor will be ready to be as accepting.
What do you think? Does AJ deserve to jump right back into a Sprint Cup ride?
