Blog Photo - AJ Allmendinger suspended indefinitely - "B" Sample tests positiveHe hired his own toxicologist to attend the testing of the "B" sample taken earlier this month at Kentucky, and today the results were conclusive.

He can cry or blame the testing process all he wants.  He can claim the testing process has ruined his career.  He can protest, shout his innocence to the heavens.

In the end, none of those protests matter.

AJ Allmendinger has been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR and will have to complete their procedures for reinstatement before he will be allowed behind the wheel of a car in a NASCAR sanction event.

His agent, Tara Ragan, is doing what she is paid to do, and that is to protest that something must have caused the positive result.  She told the media that they are undergoing rigorous tests to AJ's motor coach, home, trying to determine what could have caused the positive result, which is reportedly within only nanograms of what is acceptable.  The substance is only being described as a stimulant.

Penske has stated that they are still evaluating the situation, and in the meantime, Sam Hornish Jr. will remain in the car for Indianapolis and Pocono.

What's your take?  Is AJ another Jeremy Mayfield, or is he just the dude who had the rotten luck to have chewed the wrong stick of gum, or eat the wrong candy.  Or could it be the 5 Hour Energy as has been suggested all along?  If that is the case, what does that mean for the sponsor?

I must admit, the revelation that the positive substance was an amphetamine troubles me more than the rather mundane "stimulant".  How do you accidentally take an amphetamine?

I hope it is a horrible accident or something, but my hopes are diminishing.

And Dan, I have to say, I thought of you when I was submitting this, because I knew you had had lunch with him, and were impressed with him.  I just don't know what to think, this seems so unlike him.

AJ Allmendinger tested positive for amphetamines, his business Tara Ragan confirmed today. She said the term was so broad that she opted to refer to it as a stimulant. Brand names of medications that contain or metabolize into amphetamines include Adderall, Dexedrine, Dextrostat, Desoxyn, Didrex, ProCentra and Vyvanse. They can also be used recreationally as a performance enhancer, know on the streets as "speed".

I'm not a big NASCAR guy, but I had lunch with Allemendinger about a year ago and he was an incredibly nice, thoughtful, down-to-earth guy. I couldn't be more surprised by this entire development.
