AL East: Yankees Trail Red Sox By Just 1 1/2
9/20/07

What is going on here? The AL East lead is down to just 1½. Yankees have been down as much as 14½.

Both teams are in the playoffs so this isn't critical, but you have to be concerned if you're a Red Sox fan. Right? When a big win was needed against a rookie pitcher, all Boston could muster was 3 hits. With the Yankees breathing down their neck, they get swept by a team that's playing for nothing. Not good, Boston, not good.

As for the Yankees, they took care of an inferior opponent like the Red Sox should have done. Andy Pettitte pitched into the 8th inning, winning his 200th, and Mariano looked like how Mariano should. I had the Red Sox going deep, deep into the playoffs but this last week is disconcerting.

Even though winning the division isn't the end all be all, with this rivalry it matters and Yankee fans are feeling good.

How do you think this plays out in the playoffs

The 2006 Cardinals proved that how you finish the regular season means nothing in the playoffs.

I also see my dream of an October where everyone is not obsessed with the Yankees and Red Sox will once again go unfulfilled.

It's true, it happened once.
