Our weekly college football feature is back, where we take a look at each of the Associated Press ballots. Our mission is to hold these "experts" accountable, in hopes of improving the AP Poll in some small way. We'll be calling out all those writers who show far too much homerism to the team they cover. We'll point out those we don't think watched a single game, and those ballots that simply don't make any sense. And, occasionally we might even give someone a pat on the back when credit is due.We are at the half way point of the College Football season, and for the most part the Pollsters have figured out where to slot teams where in the polls.
This is also the final week of just the AP and Coaches polls as the first BCS poll of the year comes out on Sunday. It is a shame the Coaches won't release their votes since they are the poll involved in the BCS formula. The AP Pollsters aren't apart of the formula anymore, but those same writers and talking heads help shape the national debate, so for that, they must be picked on.
This week there were only a small handful of ballots that, while not overly terrible, had some glaring issues on them, and one that really needs to be examined. So lets get to it.
Two of the three ESPN/ABC faces that have votes in the AP poll fall in this space this week. These three guys are front and center on Saturdays and as much as we don't want to admit it, really do shape the way the nation feels about certain teams.
Craig James of ABC seems to have forgot that USC beat Ohio St. as he has the Trojans at 8, 2 spots behind Ohio St. Craig also has Kansas at 9 after they struggled at home to beat Iowa St., Oklahoma St. at 13, 1 spot ahead of unbeaten TCU, Oklahoma at 16, ahead of Nebraska and Oregon. He also dropped LSU all the way to 20, one spot behind Notre Dame and one ahead of Michigan. I honestly don't understand how Craig James can rank the teams the way he does, all he does is sit around on Saturdays and watch every game he could want.
Kirk Herbstreit is the other ESPN/ABC personality who submitted an interesting ballot. Ohio St., who hasn't beaten anyone of worth all year, is at 8, 1 spot ahead of Boise St. Herbie has Oklahoma at 12 ahead of Cincinnati, Nebraska, and TCU. I am as big of an OU fan as there is but we are no where near 12, if we beat Texas this week sure but not yet. Herbie also left Auburn at 17 after their beatdown at the hands of Arkansas. Notre Dame came in at 19, while he dropped the unbeaten Kansas Jayhawks down to 25.
There are a few ballots with only a couple oddities in comparison to the ABC guys.
- Teddy Feinberg of the Las Cruces Sun-News submitted a decent ballot, except for having Oklahoma St. at 9 ahead of Iowa (10) and Cincinnati (11) and BYU one spot ahead of TCU (13).
- Rich Kaipust of the Omaha World-Herald slotted Oklahoma St at 11 and Penn St. at 12, while Cincinnati is all the way at 16.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald has it bad for Iowa as he listed them at number 4. Look I get that Iowa is unbeaten and in a BCS conference but the 4th best team in the nation doesn't struggle to put away Northern Iowa and Arkansas St. at home.
- John Clay of the Lexington Herald-Limited is in this space every week. This week it is for putting Oklahoma at 11 and Iowa at 12. He also has Oklahoma St. at 15 ahead of TCU at 16, while leaving Ole Miss at 25.
