Our weekly college football feature where we take a look at each of the Associated Press ballots. Our mission is to hold these "experts" accountable, in hopes of improving the AP Poll in some small way. We'll be calling out all those writers who show far too much homerism to the team they cover. We'll point out those we don't think watched a single game, and those ballots that simply don't make any sense. And, occasionally we might even give someone a pat on the back when credit is due. Before we take aim at the AP Pollsters, first a comment on the USA Today Coaches Poll. Just in case you needed any further evidence that Nick Saban hasn't made a lot of friends in the coaching profession, look no further than how the coaches (and their assistants) voted this week. Alabama 4th? Just two coaches voted Alabama No. 1 and although we have no proof, I'll tell you they were Mark Dantonio -- worked under Saban, still friends -- and Mark Richt who saw first hand how good the Crimson Tide are. Oklahoma, Missouri and LSU have been impressive in their own right, but at least on the coaching side of things, those teams are ranked ahead of Alabama for more reasons than just getting a head start in the preseason polls.
Anyways, onto the task at hand: Picking apart the Week 6 AP Pollsters. I have to admit it's a job well done this week. While I disagree with Oklahoma at No. 1, we don't find a lot of embarrassing faults this week, but nonetheless there's still a few worth picking on.
Worst Ballot John Hunt (The Oregonian, OR)
This is hardly a terrible ballot, but we're going to bust John for being a homer. John has the Oregon Ducks ranked 14th, followed by the Georgia Bulldogs at 15. We all saw the Dawgs get kicked in the groin, and only manage to get back up in the 2nd half, but since John has Alabama at No. 3 one would figure it wasn't that terrible of a loss. Oregon's lone loss also comes on its home turf to Boise State. Where are the Broncos ranked? 9th.
So yeah, Oregon is better than Georgia. Not to mention Ohio State at 19th is a stretch.
Credit goes to both Alabama Pollsters. They've got every reason to rank the Crimson Tide ahead of everyone, yet Doug Segrest and Jon Johnson slotted Oklahoma in at No. 1. You know they were just trying to be nice or motivate Alabama a little more.
Molly Yanity (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, WA) continues to trumpet the Kentucky Wildcats fight song. At least Alabama will force Molly to realize the Wildcats are just an average team and not the 17th best team in America.
Jon Wilner (San Jose Mercury-News, CA) got it right at the top with Alabama, but made sure he would get a mention here with Utah at 8, Boise State at 9 and BYU at 11. If we're ranking non-BCS teams, at least get them in the right order, and if you're ranking Utah and Boise State at least realize they're not better than Texas (13), Southern California (15). Wilner is also aboard the Vanderbilt Commodores bandwagon, one we're on as well, but we're nowhere near his enthusiasm with a No. 12 ranking.
Joe Giglio (Raleigh News, NC) deserves mention for South Florida at No. 5. Down boy.
Adam Van Brimmer (Savannah Morning News, GA) will just not forgive Ohio State for its loss to his No. 9 USC, however, ranking the Buckeyes all the way down at 23rd. But Wake Forest, ranked 22nd, losing at home to Navy was a much better loss apparently.
Those are our only greivances this week. Feel free to share your own and provide at Top 25 below.
