Despite all the attention give to Michael Phelps early gold medal and the remarkable men's 4 x 100 freestyle relay come from behind victory, it has been deemed a disappointing start for the American swim team.
Monday night's events might have changed the tide. In addition to Michael Phelps winning his third gold in three tries, Aaron Piersol defended his gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke, as did Natalie Coughlin in the women's race.
Piersol broke yet another world record in his gold (video) below, while American Matt Grevers won an impressive Silver medal.
Coughlin's race was much closer. Natalie had been trading her world record in and out at the US Olympic Trials back in June, and on Monday watched Australian Kirsty Coventry steal it away again in the semi-finals. Tuesday, she didn't grab the world record back from Coventry, but she did barely edge out the gold medal.
All and all a great night for US Swimming.
Not necessarily a great night for French swimmer Laure Manaudou, who has been at the center of attention do to provocative photos and a sex time surfacing online. Tuesday, she couldn't hit the emotions:
