Aaron Rodgers Can And Will Beat Out Brett Favre In The Packers Quarterback Competition
Brett Favre Must Have Forgotten Who Holds the All-Time Interceptions Record
So far, everyone seems to have assumed that upon his return to the Packers, Brett Favre will completely destroy Aaron Rodgers in the team's competition to be the starting QB, and Rodgers will again be relegated to clipboard duty. But it IS a competition, so there IS a chance that Rodgers will win. That chance is a lot better than most people think.

For all of Favre's greatness, the choice isn't as obvious as some may like to think. While he has certainly put up some incredible numbers over the past 16 seasons, that means very little when it comes to the Green Bay Packers in 2008, and beyond. Being a GM in the NFL is like running the ultimate fantasy football keeper league. While Favre has been the undeniable choice in the past, there is no guarantee that he's the choice for 2008, and Rodgers is definitely the choice for the future. If a fantasy owner had to choose between Favre and Rodgers in a fantasy league, I think most would choose Rodgers. So why does everyone think that Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy will choose Favre, just because he's Brett Favre? Not only could it cripple the Packers' future at the QB competition if Rodgers chooses to demand a trade and/or walk after this season, it might not even be the best choice for THIS year.

Favre is legendary for being a gunslinger in the pocket, and is remarkably good at making something out of nothing. But almost as often as he makes a great play, he makes mistakes, and tries to force passes into coverage. We all know that Favre is the all-time leader in passing touchdowns... but he's also the all-time leader in interceptions. We don't have as large a sample for Rodgers, but he looked very impressive against the Cowboys last season.

The Packers have the potential to have a solid running game with Ryan Grant finally signed, and with the way their last season ended (a Favre interception in the NFC Championship game), they might want to move towards a lower-risk style of play. Favre's interceptions decreased last year, but in the two years prior, he combined for 47 INT's, with only 38 TD's. He averages over 1 INT per game, and has led the NFL in INT's twice, and once as recently as 2006. Whether he acts his age or not, he's still approaching his 39th birthday, and the chances of his skills declining are far higher than the chances of him improving. Favre is not capable of running a conservative, low-risk offense, and if the Packers are interested in that, then it's clear that Aaron Rodgers is the better choice.

Many people love to point out the lack of experience when it comes to Rodgers, and that he's basically still an untested rookie. But don't forget, Rodgers was projected to go as high as #1 overall when he was drafted in 2005. The Packers undoubtedly got a steal when they picked him up at #24 overall, and you can be sure that if the 49ers front office were honest with themselves, they would tell you that they would rather have Rodgers than Alex Smith, who was selected with the #1 overall pick. At Cal, Rodgers threw 43 TD's and only 13 INT's, and led the Bears to a 17-5 record as the starting QB. He's relatively mobile, has a strong arm, and there is no doubt whatsoever that he's mentally strong, because he has handled the Favre fiasco almost perfectly.

Not only does Rodgers have a great college pedigree, he has sat behind a guy who is not only one of the best ever, but has made plenty of mistakes for Rodgers to learn from. Watching Brett throw 62 TD's in 3 seasons might be the best thing for Rodgers. Like with fellow Pac-10 alum Carson Palmer, the time on the bench might also pay off huge dividends. Rodgers' skill, mental fortitude, youth and potential are just some of the things that will win him the Packers' starting QB job.

Does Brett Favre have a great chance to come in and win the competition, and start for the Packers? Sure. But it's no guarantee. Aaron Rodgers will give Favre a run for his money, without a doubt. And by that, I mean I think he'll win the job. He gives the Packers a better chance to win, not only now, but also in the long-term.

If I had to bet, I'd say that regardless of who deserves it, Favre gets cut Sunday night before the Monday Night Opener.  There's been rumors of it, and quite frankly, I think Ted Thompson will do anything that gives him the last laugh, even if it screws over the team.

Man I hope Rodgers wins this.

Moving on.  Tired of hearing about it.  This all could have been avoided if Favre would make up his mind quicker and then Rodgers could have just said, "trade me bitches"!

The only way Rodgers is starting on opening weekend is if Brett Favre has been traded or cut.

anyone that knows anything about football knows the " All-Time Interceptions Record " is just a byproduct of all the other records, to own this one, you must own them all, witch in case Favre pretty much does own them all...

I'm not questioning Favre's accomplishments. BUT... think about it... if the Packers want to run an offense that is even a LITTLE bit conservative, then Favre just isn't the guy for the job. Do you think he's even capable of running a conservative offense? I highly doubt it. He's a high-risk, high-reward type of player.

See... this is what gets me about Packers fans. If the Patriots outright released Tom Brady tomorrow, I would still root for the Patriots to beat whichever team he goes to... because I'm a Patriots fan, not a Brady fan. I was a Pats fan long before Tom showed up, and I'll be a Pats fan long after he's gone. You're not truly a Packers fan, you're a Favre brown-noser. And it's disgusting.

Where's the proof that Favre can replicate last season? What makes you think that he won't revert back to 2006, when he led the league in INT's? Aaron Rodgers was a first round pick, and obviously has shown enough potential that the Packers felt comfortable with him being the starter.

I wish more Packers fans could at least look at this objectively. Yes, Favre might be better. But at least acknowledge that Rodgers could also be the better choice. And realistically, if Favre starts this year, Rodgers will leave, and the the Packers are screwed again. Favre can't play forever.

Why would they run a conservative offense when they have the talent to do so much more?  The offense was only dumbed down for Rodgers..... since he's "new".

Like Rodgers is the saving grace of the Packers?  Who cares if Rodgers leaves -- I thought he should have left two years ago -- Like he has done ANYTHING for the Packers?
His "first start" last night included a 35% completion rate.... are you kidding?
If Rodgers left -- the Packers would rebuild... like always.  They drafted two qb's for Christ's sake -- even the Pack knows that Rodgers will not be their saving grace...

Well... you could probably ask the Patriots and Steelers how "dumbing down the offense" works. In case you don't understand, it has led to quite a few championships as of late.

I'm not saying that Rodgers is guaranteed to be the "saving grace" for the Packers. But he's got a better chance than Brohm or Flynn.

And the Packers didn't draft those guys because they don't have confidence in Rodgers... they drafted him because your boy Brett RETIRED... they obviously weren't anticipating his return when they were drafting... just one more way that Brett screwed over the Packers... maybe they could have drafted someone else, if they had known that Brett would change his mind.

And if Favre had played in the family day SCRIMMAGE (keep in mind, that's all it is), and if he threw 5 INT's, you would be screaming about how it's just a scrimmage, and means nothing. But since it was Rodgers, you act like it's significant. I didn't see the whole game, but from the highlights that ESPN showed (even the incompletions), Rodgers looked solid. Those WR's that you speak so highly of might not be as talented as you think.

Hold on. Do you really think that SCRIMMAGE meant anything? That's like saying Colt Brennan is a lock Pro Bowler because he had a good Hall of Fame game.

...Hi-jack alert....

Speaking of Colt Brennan...that dude did look amazing last night...against a third string defense...but still amazing!  I think he has a solid chance at being the #2 there in Washington!

...now everyone can go back to the Packer fiasco

Wow... you are always good for a laugh...

No, I don't hate Brett Favre.
Yes, Aaron Rodgers can do whatever he wants. He WILL be a starting QB in the NFL next year. If it's not with the Packers, then that's their loss.
No, I don't want to play QB for the Packers. I would be terrible at it, and I'd quite possibly get killed. Literally.

"Like always he fell short of getting the job done"

What are you talking about? When was this "always", when Aaron Rodgers failed to accomplish something when given the chance?

My question is this are you all Favre fans or Packer fans? If you were Packer fans thru and thru you would know this soap opera is not good for the team. Certainly isnt good for the locker room. But what do I know right?

Yes -- I think that SCRIMMAGE is just a taste of what's to come from Rodgers.

Lastly, (as I'm SO TIRED of arguing over the same crap with the same five people) to everyone else...
I'm a Packers fan -- who is disappointed by a 3 week fiasco that should have been resolved 2.5 weeks ago.  I'm disappointed that the Pack management was lying. I'm disappointed Brett came back -- he shouldn't have retired to begin with.  But, defending the QB I've watched since I was 13 isn't a crime.

And danny -- of course this isn't good for the team -- which is why it's all the more irritating this wasn't handled swiftly last month.

Lol... thanks for dumbing that down for me... we aren't talking about the Patriots or the Steelers -- we're talking about the Packers... and dumbing down their offense isn't going to do anything for them right now.  They're young as hell -- and have a lot of growing to do.

I'm so over this post...

While your post is not directed towards me but packer fans in general I think your painting with a broad brush here, I'm from California born & raised, fan of football 1st, Packer backer 2nd, and Favre fan 3rd, as if I had to choose an order... Everyone only see what the media is showing " crazed packer locals " and coming to conclusions from what's available on the surface...

if the packers were not " publicly owned " his return to GB would not even be in question... and isn't the leagues new slogan " Believe in Now " well who's the better QB for believing in right NOW ??? it's Brett Favre...  Thompson & McCarthy need to get on board with that...

all this typing makes me thirsty for another cold beer...
