Aaron Rodgers and Tarvaris Jackson threw for the same amount of yards, but their starts couldn't have been any more different. With the weight of the world, and Brett Favre, on his shoulders, Rodgers was sharp despite an early onslaught of penalties. Rodgers finished with the second best completion percentage for any quarterback making his first start, completing 18-of-22 passes. We'll have a more detailed breakdown of his performance later this evening.
On top of using his arm efficiently, Rodgers made some solid decisions with his feet gaining a couple first downs and also scored a touchdown on a goal line keeper and symbolic of the Cheese Heads accepting him, performed a perfect Lambeau Leap.
The guy better known for running the football, Adrian Peterson, had a typically productive evening but was limited late as the Vikings trailed and were forced to go to the air. AD ended with 103 yards on 19 carries which included a late three-yard touchdown on a draw.
While a lot of the focus was on Rodgers and Peterson, we've said all along both team's success will depend on their rushing and passing, respectively.
Ryan Grant set up the Packers final touchdown with a 57-yard scamper and finished with 97 yards. He'll need to be a little more effective throughout games, but his long run was good enough Monday night. The game was decided by Tarvaris Jackson simply not being accurate enough in the pocket. Missing a heavy chunk of preseason, the Vikings QB only completed 16 of his 35 passes and on the final drive of the game missed his receiver badly, hitting the Packers Atari Bigby to seal a big division win for the Packers.
Overall a very sloppy game at times with 21 total penalties, 12 on the Packers which would normally result in a loss. Hopefully they can ease the pressure on Rodgers for the time being. He belongs in this spot, and could very well be the best quarterback in his division. He's got a to feel a good 20 pounds lighter this evening.
More on the Rodgers debut later this evening.
