Adam Dunn Claimed By Arizona Diamondbacks On Waivers, Reds Work Out A Trade For Dallas Buck And Two Others

A Trade Only J.P. Riccardi Would Disapprove
8/11/08

We thought the big name trades were over, which was a safe bet, seeing as how the MLB trade deadline has come and gone. But thanks to a very screwy waiver system, trades are still allowed, and Adam Dunn has been acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The DBacks claimed Dunn off of waivers, which then forces Arizona and Cincinnati to work out a trade. So basically, the Reds traded their NL Home Run leader and "waivers" is just a way to make the deadline day important.

Anyways, a huge pick up for Arizona, who has struggled to drive in runs. The NL West has come down to a battle against the Los Angeles Dodgers who recently acquired Manny Ramirez, and instantly boosted their offensive production.

Even the most minute boost to the Diamondbacks is critical. Pitchers Brandon Webb and Dan Haren have two of the best ERA's in baseball. Dunn's 32 home runs and 74 RBI's will help, his .233 average may not.

Dunn was acquired in exchange for minor league pitcher Dallas Buck who was an All-American at Oregon State.

Despite the batting average and strikeouts, hard to find any faults with this trade from the Diamondbacks point of view. Arizona needed to acquire offense as the deadline, and lucked out they've worked the system to still get a guy they were targeting a week and a half later.

As for the Reds, couldn't they have gotten a little more than just a top pitching prospect?
