Throughout the year, we've been tracking the winless teams, hoping that one of them can equal last year's ineptitude displayed by the Detroit Lions. Little by little, teams have been picking up a win and falling by the wayside. After 8 weeks of football, only one team remains in the hunt. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-7, and coming off a bye week, in preparation for their final 9 games. Can they win one of them? Let's take a look at their schedule:
Week 9 vs Green Bay - The Packers are coming off an emotional loss to Brett Favre and the Vikings. And they're actually a pretty good team. Their porous offensive line can only be exposed by good defenses. In other words, not the Bucs.
Week 10 at Miami - The Dolphins had a rough start, but they're 3-1 in their last 4 games, and were beating the Saints for a while. This will be nearly impossible for the Buccaneers.
Week 11 vs New Orleans - Do I really even have to discuss this one? There's no way the Bucs will even keep this one within 20 points.
Week 12 at Atlanta - The Falcons aren't exactly a dominant team, but they have shown an ability to beat bad teams, at the very least. Their only losses are on the road against the Patriots and the Cowboys.
Week 13 at Carolina - This is one of the few games that makes me nervous. The Panthers are terrible, and they have the ability to lose to any team in the league at any given time. Hopefully, Jake Delhomme is canned before this game, but that's not likely, since their backups are just as incompetent.
Week 14 vs NY Jets - If the Bucs can fluster Mark Sanchez, they actually have a chance in this one. He's another guy (like Delhomme) who is occasionally an interception machine. But if he's on his game, it will be over before it begins.
Week 15 at Seattle - It this game were in Tampa, I'd say it would be their best chance for a win. Even in Seattle, it might be. This Seahawks team is pretty bad, and banged up worse than almost any other team in the league. That being said, it will be tough for the Bucs, whose talent level is similar to other teams when they're "banged up", to beat the Seahawks and their 12th man.
Week 16 at New Orleans - The only way I see this game being remotely close is if the Saints have already locked up home field advantage, but have already lost a game. In that case, they wouldn't care about their playoff spot, and wouldn't be going for a perfect season. Even then, I think they'd smoke the Bucs. Without really trying.
Week 17 vs Atlanta - From what I've seen from the Falcons, they'll probably be fighting for a wild card spot at this point. They'll want to have some momentum heading into the playoffs, and I'd be surprised if they let the Bucs off the hook.
Can the Buccaneers keep pressing on and achieve imperfection? I think that with their remaining schedule, it's definitely very possible. I'd put their chances at about 50/50 from this point on. What do you think?
