If the Akron Zips play as well as they look in 2014, they'll undoubtedly be contending for a Mid-American Conference East Division title and will be playing in their first bowl game since 2005. Blog Photo - Akron Football: Zips Unveil New Uniforms for 2014 Season

Coach Terry Bowden tweeted out a picture of the team's new uniforms last week, saying that "if you want to play like a champion you have to look like one!"

Well put.

Akron will be sporting a black-and-gold look, likely replacing the blue away uniforms (much like those of the St. Louis Rams) it has worn over the last several years. A bold look, but that's not the attention grabber.

As you can see -- actually, you probably can't see anymore because of the piercing glare pulsating off your computer screen and into your eyes -- the Zips' helmets definitely carry the "OOOOH, SHINYYY" factor, and could possibly account for a few Oakleys to shatter.

Realistically, these uniforms probably won't give Akron supernatural playing abilities that will turn them into College Football Playoff contenders (but you could imagine what that'd be like if they did, right?). No, unfortunately, Akron will have to go the traditional route of relying on natural talent, team effort, roster depth, etc. (you know, the boring stuff) to win games this fall.

But that could be O.K., as the Zips won four of five games to end the 2013 regular season and have a good chance to carry that momentum into August all the way through December, where they could win their first bowl game in school history.
