Alabama hires Cristobal to coach OL
Cristobal, who was interviewed last week, was in Tuscaloosa on Monday to finalize a deal.
Miami (Fla.) brought Cristobal back onto the staff on January 10 after he was fired from FIU, where he spent 2007-12.
While the overall record may not show it (27-47), Cristobal did an incredible amount of mop-up duty for the FIU football program. He took a 0-12 team – infamous for its brawl with the Hurricanes – and won the Sun Belt Conference just four years later.
The Panthers took an obvious step back in 2012, ending with just three wins. But the move to get rid of Cristobal still stunned many people, especially after they replaced him with Ron Turner.
Al Golden swooped in immediately to put him back on the Hurricanes’ coaching staff – knowing it’d be an excellent pick up – but there’s no way Cristobal would turn down an offer from Saban and the chance to win a BCS National Championship ring.
Besides, I don’t expect Cristobal to go very long without picking up another head coaching offer – he did turn down an opportunity at Rutgers before last season.
