Aldon Smith the most recent NFL player popped for DUI
Smith was found by police in a one-car accident at 7 a.m. on Friday morning. According to San Jose Police Sgt. Heather Randol, "At some point, they did a breath sample and it was over the limit." Smith was then arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Fortunately, Smith was by himself in the car, emerged from the accident unscathed, and did not injure anyone else.
This is the most recent of several off-field incidents that Smith has been involved in since coming into the league. He picked up a DUI in January of 2012 that was later reduced to reckless driving under a first-time offender program. He was also involved in an incident over the summer in which he suffered multiple minor stab wounds. Finally, he was named in a lawsuit that suggests he and former teammate Delanie Walker hosted a party at which they were firing illegal weapons. Two people were shot at that party.
With the incidents piling up, the NFL will look into the possibility of suspending Smith. Fortunately for the 49ers, they likely won't hand down a punishment until next season.
The 49ers have yet to comment on Friday morning's DUI, but Smith was quoted as saying, "I need to make better decisions and surround myself with good people." It's easier said than done, but hopefully he's finally willing to cut out the off-field drama.
