It's clear that I care way too much about Alex Rodriguez participating in this year's home run derby, but I just can't get over the lame "it'll mess my swing up excuse" that was also used by Barry Bonds. A-Rod owes it to the game to participate in the last All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. But aside from the fan entertainment factor, I just don't buy his excuse, especially upon a closer look at his numbers before and after participating in past home run derbies.
2001
Prior to the All-Star Home Run Derby at Safeco Field, Rodriguez hit 25 home runs in 87 games which was good for 1 HR every 14 at-bats.2002
After participating in the arduous Derby, A-Rod crushed 27 long balls for the Rangers in their remaining 75 games. That was good for a homer every 11 at-bats. Even you non math majors should be able to realize his improved home run swing.
Furthermore, in the first 11 games after his swing got messed up, Alex's batting average bolted up to .326, and ended with a better overall average in the second half of the season.
The following season, Rodriguez hit a career high 57 home runs. 27 of those came during the first 86 games, where he circled the bases every 12 at-bats.So Alex, tell us again how this Home Run Derby damages your swing?
After managing just two home runs at Miller Park in the first round, Alex caught fire and hit 30 home runs in the second half. His pace was good enough for a home run just under every 10 at-bats. Additionally, his batting average suffered no discernible damage.
/done with A-Rod, I promise
