Ah, the New York Post. Perhaps the only newspaper out there that would actually dig deeper into this absurd "Did Madonna brainwash A-Rod?" question has indeed done that.Today, the Post managed to get an interview with Dodd Romero - Rodriguez's former trainer and godfather to his two daughters. He also spent last week in Paris with Cynthia Rodriguez and her two daughters when all this absurdity started.
But it's Romero's words about A-Rod that are hilarious.
"Alex, God bless him, is lost," Romero said. "I think he got pulled in by the dark side, if you can say that nicely. He's totally brainwashed."I don't know why, but I find all of that utterly hilarious. But you know what's even funnier? This:
"She [Cynthia] believes it's what ruined her marriage," Romero added.
"He's more infatuated with the fact he's with an icon instead of realizing what's important, which is family and truth," said Romero.
"He'd be in the gym and if a Madonna video would come on, he'd go into a trance," Romero said.Something about A-Rod blasting "Like A Virgin" as he drives into Yankee Stadium seems totally appropriate.
And when A-Rod is driving in his car, he'll only listen to Madonna music, the trainer said.
The relevant question, of course, is what does this do to A-Rod's legacy as a player? Well, in all honesty, I think A-Rod's now totally disassociated himself from the average fan. First it was the ridiculous contract, then it was getting caught having an affair, then it was interrupting the World Series by opting out of his contract, and now he's pushed it over the edge by essentially joining a cult and getting brainwashed by Madonna. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can relate to those series of events (well, except maybe the affair).
Rodriguez may one day retire as the best player who ever played the game, but he'll never be the most fondly remembered player. Instead, he'll be remembered as an arrogant, un-clutch, horrible father and greedy crackpot.
Is that fair? You know what, it probably is.
