Alex Smith Put On Injured Reserve, Will Miss 2008 Season. Also Now Biggest Bust In NFL History.
Alex Smith Is Dangerously Close To Passing Ryan Leaf As The Biggest NFL Quarterback Bust Ever
I wasn't sure we would ever reach a day when we got a quarterback NFL Draft bust that was worse than Ryan Leaf, but man oh man is Alex Smith ever cutting it close.

Today, the 49ers put quite possibly the worst #1 pick in the history of the NFL - Alex Smith - on the injured reserve list for the 2008 season. You may recall that Smith suffered a non-contact injury to his surgically repaired shoulder last Friday, a rather fitting end to what has been a disastrous career.

Anyway, here's what Smith leaves the 49ers with:
  • 32 games played
  • 11-19 record
  • 54.4% completion rate
  • 19 touchdowns to 31 interceptions
  • A career 63.5 quarterback rating

By comparison, here are Leaf's numbers:
  • 25 games played
  • 4-17 record
  • 48.4% completion rate (Yikes)
  • 14 touchdowns to 36 interceptions (Double yikes)
  • A career 50.0 quarterback rating (Triple yikes)

I'll be honest, Leaf really is worse than Alex Smith, and by a significant degree, which I admittedly didn't think was possible. But while Leaf is the biggest quarterback draft bust ever, period, he wasn't drafted #1 overall (even though I know he nearly was). And while there have been a number of other highly drafted flameout quarterbacks, like Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, and Rick Mirer to name a few, none of them were drafted #1 overall either. So the question is, has there ever been an overall #1 drafted quarterback that's been worse than Smith in the history of the NFL? It doesn't look like it.

Here's the short lost list of Smith's competitors - mainly because most #1 overall quarterback selections at least have mediocre careers.
  • Michael Vick - Dogfighting is why he's on here.
  • David Carr - He's been horrible, but Carr still has much better stats than Smith.
  • Tim Couch - Generally considered one of the worst #1 pick QB busts ever, even more so than Carr for some reason. By the way, Couch has significantly better stats than Smith.
  • Jeff George - He may not lived up to expectations at all, but had a pretty long career. I'm not sure Smith will ever see a football field again.
So while Smith isn't the biggest quarterback draft bust ever, it seems fair to say that he's the biggest #1 overall drafted quarterback bust of all time.

By far.

If we're looking strictly at #1 overall drafted QBs, just on sheer stats, and the fact that Couch was in a playoff game, I think Smith is easily worse than Couch. It isn't even close.

Even allowing for the difficulty in assessing quarterback talent out of college--which has been discussed here several times--the San Francisco front office really rate as morons.

Couch really gets a bit of unfair treatment.  He never had any team around him, and considering that, he played decently.  He was far and away better than any of the other listed busts.

I don't think anyone is, or should be, really surprised by this.  Smith was a system QB and nothing more.  Some team will make the same mistake with Tim Tebow in a year or two as well.  In that team's defense, at least Tebow will have played against legit teams.

Personally, I think Kyle Orton is a far more impressive true QB than Tebow is.  Tebow gets his success from running and throwing screens to freakish athletes who have an advantage they'd never get in the pros.  Tebow is a great college player, but he'll never make it in the NFL.

Leaf was a bigger bust but Im happy to see Smith out of there for good.

Just give the chode his money and let him walk.

+1 to all of those who mentioned Tebow' s possible struggles.  You're absolutely right and he's in big trouble if he can't learn a pro offense.

In all fairness to Hamster Hands, Alex has been more civil with the press than Leaf was.  He hasn't exploded on a Sportswriter yet.

He's still young enough that if he gets into a situation with a stable coaching/o-coordinator situation he might be ok, but until they brought Dilfer in, he had no mentor at his position and then the whole revolving O-coordinator situation.  His chances of success were slim to none to begin with.

I used to be a big mark for Mike Nolan too, and I'm starting to see things a little clearer now.  He's gotta go.

I had 'em at 7-9 this year but that included a week 1 win over Arizona.

You're right though.  There's not much left positive to say.  Frank Gore has been a nice surprise but the ownership, front office, coaching staff, stadium... it's all garbage... things went bad real fast.

Man, now I'm depressed.  I'm going to go to a friends house for pizza and video games and not tell my mom where I am.

Man, what a disappointment! Gone, are the days of glory and now we have to sit and wait another Montana or Young phenom. ALEX SMITH, you're a waste of a QB and talent. If only i had his size, I would say arm strength but we all know he does not have that.
