There are many times when I see a breaking headline on a site like ESPN that says something like "Allan Houston signs with Knicks" and I say to my self, there's no way that can possibly be true. And yet, it is.
Apparently the ghost of Isiah Thomas is still fluttering around the Knicks' office, because there's really no other logical explanation for why on earth the Knicks would sign Allan "Arthritic Knees" Houston to another contract.
Just so we can be clear here, Houston is 37-years old. When he retired in 2005 because of an arthritic left knee, he was the second highest paid player in the league ($20.7 million) behind Kevin Garnett ($21 million). So who knows, maybe the Knicks actually just want to see him finally, you know, play.
Houston is expected to sign a contract paying him the league minimum salary of $1.26 million for a player of 10 or more years of experience.
But here's the thing, Houston made an attempt to return to the Knicks last season, and it failed miserably.
So there you go Knicks fans. You're bringing in a 37-year-old guy with an arthritic knee who last played pro ball in 2005 - and failed in a comeback last year - to camp. I'm sure you'll be turning the corner any day now.
Oh , and Stephon Marbury will be at camp too? Fantastic. I smell championship.
By the way, I can't be the only one who thinks that pro sports may be the only industry where you can make ridiculously boneheaded moves and not be fired. How in good conscience can a team even consider spending $1.26 million on a washed up reject like Houston while not trying out younger players?
Beats me, but that's why I'm not employed by the Knicks. Because I actually make rational decisions.
