What do you say next year we just give the best record in baseball home field advantage (which is likely to be the AL, anyway), because at this rate it's going to be a while before the NL gets Game 1 of the World Series.Aside from Ichiro's inside the park home run and the bottom of the 9th, it was a typically dull All Star Game. The highlight came before the first pitch, as it often does. For those that really love baseball, tributes to all-time greats are always moving. Willie Mays deserved his Ted Williams moment, and although MLB may have tried a little too much to give him a similar spotlight, the recognition was fitting and the capstone of the 78th All Star Game. I also enjoyed the sincerity of the Willie Mays - Derek Jeter - Ken Griffey Jr interview.
The 9th inning did leave me with one burning question. You've got the bases loaded, 2 outs and one of the best closers on the mound. It's not often you actually have one of the best hitters in baseball at your disposal to pinch hit. Why on Earth was Albert Pujols not used instead of Aaron Rowand? That decision made sending A-Rod to home look intelligent.
Instead a fly ball to right field gives the AL its 10th win in the last 11 All Star Games.
Ok, one more question. How bizarre is Ichiro Suzuki? I mean we know he's a little strange, but when is the last time you've seen the All Star Game MVP all dressed up with sport jacket and tie for the post-game ceremony.
