Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti blamed match referee over his side 2-1 defeat in the El Clasico at Camp Nou on Saturday. Real Madrid rued over the unfair spot-kick decision after the game ended. Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo claimed to have been pulled down in the penalty area by center back Javier Mascherano, but the match referee refused to give second thought to the matter.

The game was delicately poised at 1-0 after Neymar’s beautiful strike in the first-half. Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez doubled the lead with a beautiful chip before Jesse put one back from a pass from Ronaldo.

“The penalty seems very clear, it seems that everyone has seen it, but not the referee, who has not called it,” Ancelotti told Real Madrid’s official site after the game. “I think in the second half the game was very good. We pushed more, played more, we had control of the game and we had good chances to score.

“The team fought toe to toe against a very difficult team, and by the end we had them on the ropes, it's rare that you see Barcelona trying to waste time at the end of a game. But there were two clear penalties and although I don't like to try and justify defeats by talking about referees, there are some things you cannot fight against.”

Ancelotti’s tactics came under fire after the game. The Italian tactician played Sergio Ramos in the midfield instead of the defense and put Angel Di Maria on the left wing instead of Gareth Bale, although both of them have performed better on opposite wings. Cristiano Ronaldo was the sole striker in front of the sticks, but without a prolific playmaker behind him.

“I do not think we played with three defensive midfielders because Modric is not one,” said Ancelotti rubbishing suggestion that his selection was defensive. “Khedira and Ramos played defensively to give balance. I think that Barcelona did not play with so many attackers.

“The aim was to put it out there for balance in between. After the match against Juventus, Illarramndi had a problem in the thigh and I did not want to risk it because he started the season with a serious injury.

“I've talked with Sergio and was happy to play in this position, has played well before and this is the reason.”
