Andruw Jones, Scott Boras Able to Bait Dodgers Into Paying Him $36 Million Over 2 Years
Wow. I almost gave this the [dumbass] tag for Dodgers GM Ned Coletti.

Los Angeles and Andruw Jones/Scott Boras have preliminary agreed to a 2-year, $36.2 million deal. That's $18-mil for a .222 batting average.

It was obvious some team was going to overpay Jones based on his past and lingering potential, but this caught me off guard. Sure, Jones provides some name power for marketing purposes but this contract makes him the 5th highest paid player in baseball. It shouldn't take you more than 5 seconds to name 10 players more deserving.

Jones was one of the best center fielders in baseball, both offensively and defensively before this year's debacle. For only a 2 year deal, why not see if he can at least partially get back to his old level? Yes, it's a lot of money, but the Dodgers can afford it. I'd much rather have this deal than Torii Hunter's and Juan Pierre's from last year.

You mean you wouldn't pay $18 million a year for a guy with a .724 OPS. I mean, that was just a fraction behind Mark Loretta. What more do you want?

Maybe they were looking at the 10 Gold Gloves in 12 years and are hoping that their lineup will give him what he needs to get going.

That means the Dodgers would pay him(Loretta) $19 million a year.

Apparently the deal is set up where there's a $12 million signing bonus, $9 million for the first year, and  $15 million for the second year. Do signing bonuses helps save money on the actual payroll?

My limited knowledge of contracts would be that signing bonuses in baseball are just for the benefit of the player (he wants more right now kind of thing). They are only truly relevant when there is a salary cap to play with.

Too bad the Dodgers have Juan Pierre's contract too.

The only criticism I really have of the deal is that they will now be having Andruw and Pierre in the same outfield, leaving either Ethier or Kemp as the odd man out.  I suppose this means it will free the Dodgers up to trade one of them for more of a need position, but I'm not sure if I would give up their potential Dodger careers for 2 years of Andruw-Pierre in the outfield.

You're right. I had forgotten about the OF prospects the Dodgers have. I'll amend my thoughts then. The contract itself isn't as bad as it looks. $18 million a year is an overpay, but at least it's a short-term overpay, so if it's a mistake, it won't be a crippling one.

However, as you say, it doesn't fit the team. In that way, Coletti is compounding his Pierre mistake with this signing, especially if Pierre is going to move to LF. Blocking Kemp or Ethier also hurts, unless they're traded, which may or may not be a mistake.

Bottom line, the LA teams really like free agent outfielders.

I can't believe it's only two years.  I thought Andruw was looking for a long-term contract... At least he should have been.

He wanted one.  But after last year, teams weren't very optimistic about what he could bring to the table for a long term deal.  He will probably hope he has a super year next season and then he will want to get a contract extension.

To Ahusted, Andruw hasn't shown any signs of steroid use, so let's try to keep the accusations to a minimum.. He's always been big and his head hasn't grown 2 hat sizes like Bonds' has.. So I'm pretty sure he's not on HGH.
Now, as for the contract. It was semi-beneficial to the Dodgers in that, as a previous poster has said, it's a short-term contract and if it was a mistake.. It won't be for long. Also, I'd like to point out a factor that not many people have thought of.. His Hitting Coach. Andruw Jones has hit over .300 in a Season before, and it just so happens it was in 2000, the year before Terry Pendleton became the Braves' Hitting Coach.  Not taking anything away from Terry Pendleton.. Because he's done excellent, It's just been with Andruw that he hasn't stressed contact as much as power.. Thus Andruw's more powerful seasons have come in recent years, whereas his Avg. has dropped.
Jones' Batting Avg from 98'-2000= .284
Jones' Batting Avg from 2001-Present= .257
Remember who is now the Dodger's Hitting Coach...... Don Mattingly. It should be very interesting to watch him work with Andruw, and I do believe we'll see his Avg. increase dramatically from that paltry .222 last season. Let's also not forget 10 consecutive Gold Gloves.... This could be a great short-term signing for the Dodgers.

If everyone stays healthy, that's a scary line-up.

I'd be more scared of the bottom half. Furcal/Pierre/Nomar makes up a pretty low OBP for your 1,2,3 guys.

True.  But if they stay healthy, that OBP will go up, IMO.  All three of those guys have had nagging (or substancial) injuries in the past few years, which has dropped their OBP.

This could end up being the biggest flop of a line-up in MLB this season.  The Dodgers have been known to spend tons of money on talent before, just to end up being the biggest dissapointment in the league.

Once Again, Let's not forget Joe Torre and Don Mattingly though. That's the difference this year. Optimism is in the air in L.A.

I dont know if im alone on this one, but I think LA Dodgers got a good deal out of this. Last year was Jones's first bad season.... where he had 29 HR and 94 RBI

If he can somehow get HALFway back to what he was in 05 and 06 where he hit 51 and 41 HRs and hit 149 and 148 RBIs, this is a HUGE deal for LA.

They also needed a big hitter.....

Who hit 3rd and 4th for them last year?

Nomar?

I think its a ok deal for the dodgers , it is alot of money but they didnt get locked into a long term deal and if andruw comes around can always talk extension. Jones will definately be on the list of bounce back candidates for next season.
