Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo personally asked the club not to sell him. The Argentina international feels Ronaldo is the reason he will be playing under Real Madrid colors this season.
The 25-year-old has been consistently linked with an away move this summer and as the transfer window arrives towards its last stage rumors about Di Maria’s exit were intensifying. With the signing of Isco, Di Maria fell down the pecking order at Real Madrid. The arrival of Gareth Bale would have further pushed him down.
The former Benfica winger told TyC Sports that Ronaldo saved his Real Madrid career. The Argentinean forward claims Ronaldo personally approached senior Real Madrid officials to convince them not to let go Di Maria.
“I found out from elsewhere, not directly from him, that he had done that for me,” Di Maria said. “I am very happy that a player like that -- a reference at Madrid -- supports me, asks for me not to leave, as people were saying that it might happen. That is very important.”
Real Madrid plans on offloading a number of big names from their squad in order to make a final bid for Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale. Offloading players will also help Real Madrid in offering Bale with the €9 million annual salary they have promised.
According to a report in AS, Ronaldo is unhappy with Real Madrid making a €100 million-plus move for Bale. The move would not only break the transfer fee record Real Madrid paid to sign Ronaldo from Manchester United, but it would also mean that Ronaldo will have to share his power at Bernabeu with Bale or leave the club.
Upon being asked to comment on the Bale transfer saga during the preseason tour of America, Ronaldo refused to speculate or comment on Bale potential move.
“It is not for me to talk about new players,” Ronaldo said. “I am very happy with the players that I have in the team. But to speak about figures that are being mentioned is for the coach and the president. I have my opinion, but I am not going to say it in front of the cameras.”
Ronaldo’s own future is still in the mist. The 28-year-old Portugal international still hasn’t inked a new contract with Real Madrid. Moreover, Ronaldo hasn’t given anything solid over speculation linking him with a return to Manchester United.
