Angels' Trumbo's All-Star Selection Well-Earned

When the rosters for Major League Baseball's 83^rd All-Star Game, it wasn't a big surprise to see Mark Trumbo's name appear. The Angels' power-hitting infielder outfielder utility guy has easily been the Halos most consistent hitter all season, helping keep the team afloat while the big bats around them found their early-season sea legs.

Angel fans have certainly been appreciative of Trumbo's production so far this year, even if his exploits were first overshadowed by Albert Pujols' struggles and later dwarfed by the dynamic play of Mike Trout.

Even more impressive is that he's doing it without a set position. The team hoped Trumbo could fill the third base void it has tried to fill ever since Chone Figgins left for Seattle. His defense made that problematic, but his offense made it impossible to take him out of the lineup.

Instead, he's spent time at third base, first base, left field, right field and designated hitter – and hasn't missed a beat at the plate. At .313/19/53, Trumbo more than deserves a spot in Kansas City. Starting Sunday's game, he led the team in homers and RBI and was second (behind Trout) in batting average.

Trumbo will be joined in Kansas City by Trout, C.J. Wilson and Jered Weaver – all of them also equally deserving of an All-Star selection. But Trumbo's season stands out as the guy in the quartet least expected to earn a spot for the Midsummer Classic.
